A large cape that covered a woman’s figure, allowing only a glimpse of her face, the origin of the ‘capote-e-capelo’ is controversial. Some say that it came from Flanders and others state that it is an adaptation of mantles and cowls that were fashionable in Portugal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Regardless, for centuries the ‘capote-e-capelo’ was a typically Azorean woman’s garment used in Faial. h/t: vintag.es. (15) Pinterest. Alfius De Bux — Senia Gluck & Felicia Sorel in Theatre Magazine... One of the first dancers from the Imperial Russian Ballet to dance in Western Europe, Anna Pavlova has been awarded near-mythical status as the Prima Ballerina who brought ballet into the 21 Century.

Cut off from her native Russia by the First World War, Pavlova made London her permanent home until her death in 1931. This year marks the centenary of her ownership of Ivy House, the grand Hampstead residence which has since become the London Jewish Cultural Centre. In celebration of Pavlova’s contribution to ballet, a book of sumptuous images of the dancer has been published with accompanying editorial about her life, Anna Pavlova: Twentieth Century Ballerina by Jane Pritchard with Caroline Hamilton. Nobody had ever seen her work and she was a complete unknown until the time of her death. For decades Vivian’s work hid in the shadows until decades later (in 2007), historical hobbyist John Maloof bought a box full of never developed negatives at a local auction for $380. John began to develop the negatives and it didn’t take long before he realised that these were no ordinary street snapshots from the 50′s and 60′s — these pictures were a lot more then that. Maier’s work is particularly evocative for those who grew up in the 50′s and 60′s because she seemed to stare deep into the soul of the time and preserve the everyday experience of the people.

A continuación una selección de fotografías de un recorrido por 150 años de lesbianismo, publicadas en la comunidad online Autostraddle: Women taking photobooth ‘selfies’ from the 1900s to the 1970s (and beyond) Going to the photobooth at the local Woolworth’s was a special event, which meant getting dressed up, smoothing down hair, wearing those clothes kept for Jesus on a Sunday.
