Solent Amphibious Challenge

A multi discipline race on land and water. The Solent Amphibious Challenge is a day long multi discipline adventure race over land and sea, held every year in the Solent strait. The aim of the race is to test the competitor's leadership, navigation and seamanship in a physically demanding combined challenge.[1] The Solent Amphibious Challenge is believed to be the first sea-land style adventure race of its kind and the race is only open to Service Teams from throughout the British Armed Forces.

The teams consist of five personnel; a Yachtmaster qualified team leader who must be entrenched with International Collision and Regulations and Local Notices to Mariners, two crew members (one competent crew qualified), a runner and a support cyclist.[2] Description[edit] The race starts with all yachts crossing the start line at Gillkicker Point with all members on board at 0900 (BST). Primal Quest

Primal Quest was an expedition-length adventure race that has been called one of the most difficult athletic events in the world and was cited as the most prestigious expedition event in North America.[1] The race once featured the largest prize purse in adventure racing.[2] Each race lasted up to ten days, with winning teams completing the course in approximately six days. Each team was required to have four members and were co-ed.

Each team was required to carry a GPS monitoring device allowing race organizers and spectators to track each team real-time via the Internet on the Primal Quest website (no longer active). This device does not offer any navigational assistance to the teams. In an emergency, the teams can use the tracking devices to signal for help. The new challenges presented to adventure racers have caused the sport to grow by leaps and bounds daily in popularity. Adventure Racing is one of the few sports where just completing a race is often considered a victory. Another driving factor in Adventure racing is the emphasis that is placed on teamwork, rather than individual achievement. Adventure Racing offers an easy crossover for cyclist, runners and water sport enthusiasts just to mention a few. The USARA membership entitles you to all of this and a whole lot more! Adventure racing. Adventure racing (also called expedition racing) is a combination of two or more endurance disciplines, including orienteering (if an orienteering map is used) and/or navigation (when non-orienteering maps are used), cross-country running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope skills.

Adventure racing

An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints can be completed in a matter of hours. There is typically no suspension of the clock during races, irrespective of length; elapsed competition time runs concurrently with real time, and competitors must choose if or when to rest. Adventure racing historically required teams to be of a specified size and to include both men and women, but many races no longer restrict team size and include single-sex divisions.

Some also include age-based categories.
