Letters of Note

http://www.lettersofnote.com/ In October of 1973, Bruce Severy — a 26-year-old English teacher at Drake High School, North Dakota — decided to use Kurt Vonnegut 's novel, Slaughterhouse-Five , as a teaching aid in his classroom. The next month, on November 7th, the head of the school board, Charles McCarthy, demanded that all 32 copies be burned in the school's furnace as a result of its "obscene language." Other books soon met with the same fate. I am writing to you in your capacity as chairman of the Drake School Board. I am among those American writers whose books have been destroyed in the now famous furnace of your school.

Kuriositas

http://www.kuriositas.com/ April 22 will see the one hundred and third birthday of a remarkable woman. Born in 1909 and the oldest living recipient of a Nobel award, she still works every day and puts her remarkable longevity down to her own discovery – NGF ( Nerve Growth Factor ). So astonishing is her vitality beyond her centenary year that many have asked the question – does this woman have the secret of eternal life?
http://dooce.com/ I posted earlier that a thunderstorm passed over the valley this morning, and at lunch I was telling Tyrant about Leta's reaction to the menacing sounds. Some kids will never see snow in their lives, or when they do it will be such an extraordinary experience that they will exhibit the look that Leta had on her face this morning when she heard thunder, the one a college kid has when he buys bad weed from his roommate and suddenly his goldfish starts talking to him in Spanish. HOLA, AMIGO. ¿Dónde está la biblioteca? Thunderstorms just don't happen with any frequency here in the valley, meaning hardly ever. At first Leta expressed horror, and I was busy getting the car ready to back out of the driveway.

Help your skin survive unpredictable weather with these two essential steps: exfoliation and moisturization. Skin-cell buildup leads to dryness, poor circulation and blemishes. Exfoliation eliminates these dead cells, revealing fresh skin that is better able to absorb moisture. And guys, take note: While men’s skin tends to be oilier than women’s, men may be more prone to epidermal dehydration.

Editor’s Picks: The Ten Best Films of 2010 | Film School Rejects

One of my favorite non-starters for articles is the very bland “as you may know.” There’s no doubt in my mind that you’ve seen me use it in the past (I’m doing it again right now). So when I thought about how to begin this year’s top ten article, I wanted to begin by saying “as you may know, one of my great honors around here is to deliver my list of the ten best films of the year.” But you may not know how much of an honor that really is. In fact, it’s difficult for me to put into words how honored I feel to have anyone read this at all, let alone the scores of readers we see on a daily basis here at Film School Rejects. It’s safe to say that I speak for everyone here when I say that I am deeply honored by the opportunity just to write about film.

Recently, I got tapped by Moo Cards to do a short review of their printing service. From the looks of their site, I was pretty excited to get to test drive their system and see if their service lived up to how cool everything looked online. I'm happy to say that it did...and then some. The product that I chose is, I think, one of the coolest they offer... the minicard . Moo let's you do up to 100 different images on 100 different cards, so these things are great for presenting the variety in your work, and some folks have even riveted a bunch of them together and used them as a Pantone-style pocket portfolio. Clever!

http://www.indieshuffle.com/#! Happy Friday, Shufflers. There is a lot of tasty music floating around, but something about today just told me to go ahead and get Moon Boot’s “Got Somebody” on our site. It’s been floating around for a few weeks now, having first appeared (I think) on The Magician’s latest mixtape, but …keep reading →
