Detroit kids died at a rate of 120 per 100,000 in 2010, the most recent year comprehensive national data is available. It was the only city to top a death rate of 100 per 100,000 children. To date, the Global Detroit Initiative has helped launch over a half dozen distinct initiatives in southeast Michigan to make the region more welcoming and to capitalize on the economic opportunity that our international population and connections bring. The average child from a low-income family is exposed to 25 hours.3 Today, the emerging science of resilience is beginning to reveal how children learn and become problem solvers, even during uncertainty and challenging circumstances. Why it matters Less than 50 percent of children born into poor communities, including the Greater Detroit region, are prepared for kindergarten ready to learn.1 Of those kids, less than 50 percent will graduate high school.2 Ninety percent of brain connections develop in the first three years of life.3 Yet by age three, a child in poverty hears 30 million fewer words than a child from a middle-income home.4 By third grade, children born into low-income families lacking strong communication skills have one-third of the vocabulary of their peers.5 A child born into a low-income home has only a 48% chance of educational success; that success rate drops to 10% by age three if the child is not stimulated through reading and creative play.1 Closing the gap begins at birth, and by cultivating positive, nurturing relationships during a child's first three years, we can greatly affect school success.

Detroit Public Schools Foundation for Early Learners provides a high quality early learning experience for special needs and general education students 4 years of age by November 1st. The Early Childhood Programs are comprised of three prekindergarten programs: the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), Project Head Start and Title I.

Students selected for the Great Start Readiness Program must have at least two (2) risk factors or meet the income guidelines. The selection process for Project Head Start is income based, and the Title I students are selected based on the needs of the school community. Detroit Public Schools’ prekindergarten classroom curriculum is aligned with the National Early Childhood Standards and Michigan State Board of Education, Early Childhood Standards of Quality.
