Hoya Lenses. How Camera Lenses are Made. The Certainty Of Sharpness. Gear Tuesday, May 25, 2010 By George Lepp With Kathryn Vincent Lepp, Photography By George Lepp On a recent photo safari, a colleague asked me to review the images he had captured with his brand-new, top-of-the-line DSLR and matching high-end lens.

The Certainty Of Sharpness

He had obtained the camera the day before he boarded a plane to Africa. We had paid a prime fee for a hot-air balloon trip over the Namib Desert that morning, and every one of his captures from the shoot was out of focus. Lesson learned—again. Common Lens Problems What causes a photographer to question his or her camera or lenses? Beyond operator error, lens sharpness can be compromised in a number of ways. Other vexing lens problems include fringing (unwanted color around the edges of details); distortion (horizontal and vertical lines are bent); flare and lack of contrast (resulting in flat and uneven lighting); and vignetting (where the light falls off to the edges of the image). All Tests / Reviews. Lens Genealogy. LENS GENEALOGY Part 1by Roger Cicala Where do new lens designs come from?

Lens Genealogy

I knew that today’s lenses are all designed using computer programs, but I was surprised to find new lenses aren’t designed from scratch. Designers start with an existing lens design and modify it. Of course, a lens designer doesn’t say “this lens really sucks, let’s use it as our starting point”. They start with a good design and try to improve it. So camera lenses, like Darwin’s finches, obey a very strict “survival of the fittest” law. Even knowing this, when I wrote a series of articles on the development of camera lenses, I was amazed to find that virtually every camera lens in use today can trace its heritage back to one of five lenses, four of which were developed by 1900.

Does the pedigree of a lens matter? Knowing the ancestry of a lens can be interesting from a historical standpoint. Early Lenses DesignsThe first lenses were rather simple things.

Characteristics of a "digital lens" The Digital Lens FAQ Revision: 0.4, December 6, 2003 (under construction) Author: Joseph S. Wisniewski Home: Copyright 2003, all rights reserved Index Brief Introduction. Interchangeable lenses for 35mm cameras. OK, to answer the burning question: will the lenses from my old film camera fit any digital camera?

Interchangeable lenses for 35mm cameras

Minolta XG-1 or other manual focus Minoltas, such as the SRT-101 - no, they won't fit. Lenses that fit an automatic focus Minolta - Maxxum or Dynax - will generally work on a Sony or Minolta DSLR. Canon AE-1 or other manual focus Canons, such as the FT series or F1 - no, they won't fit. Lenses that fit an automatic focus Canon EOS - Rebel - will generally work on a Canon DSLR.

Pentax K-Series (bayonet lenses) - yes, they will fit Pentax and Samsung digital SLRs but they won't focus automatically and they may be a pain to set the exposure. Nikon F (bayonet lenses) - yes, they will fit Nikon digital SLRs but they won't focus automatically and they may be a pain to set the exposure.

Even if they will fit, you may not want to use old lenses on a new digital camera. Digital SLRs mostly have a sensor that is smaller than 35mm film. SLR Lens & Camera Review

This time around we're gonna take a look at the UWA lenses for the NEX system. Sony E 16/2.8 was one of the first lenses introduced along the NEX cameras and so far is the widest lens available for the E mount. SLR Magic announced that it will start manufacturing its HyperPrime 12mm f/1.8 lens for the NEX camera, but so far it has been just waporware and the lens is not available anywhere in the world. Sigma's 19/2.8 EX DN is the only other wide angle lens for the NEX cameras and marks Sigma's official entrance into the race. We recently saw how well Sigma's other NEX lens, the 30/2.8 EX DN performed against its Sony competitor, the E 30/3.5 Macro, so obviously there is a tremendous interest in the 19mm lens as well.
