Old AF lenses for New D600? « Nikon Rumors Forum. If the moderators feel this thread should be combined with one already existing they can move it. I made a separate thread because the focus is on finding older AF lenses which would work good with the D600 instead of having to buy the "latest and greatest" FX lenses for thousands of dollars. You see, older 35mm film AF lenses do work with the FX sensor. For example, I am going to post photos and information on 5 lenses which I think work well with the D600 and I only paid from $35 to $120 for them, quite a bargain.

But are they sharp enough for you? If so, starting with lenses like these it becomes much less expensive to enter the FX world. All images were shot in JPEG on Picture Controls Landscape setting, matrix metering, ISO 100 and no post processing. 1. Here it is at 28mm f8 ISO 100. Lens Evaluations. Lens Survey And Subjective Evaluations By Bjørn Rørslett IntroductionDuring my many years conducting Nature and Scientific photography, I have had the opportunity to use a veritable arsenal of 35 mm and large-format lenses. Many of these I do own personally, a current total of some 100 lenses. Not all lenses are created equal, that's for sure. Price is a putative indication of optical quality, but can equally well be misleading.

People have repeatedly asked me to provide an overview of these and other lenses to show their image-producing potential. True, a number of excellent resources for evaluating lenses are found on the Net. The final verdict of any lens must come from using it for taking pictures. Because I aim to publish my photos, I am quite concerned about optical quality of the equipment I use, and test each and every lens before it is put to actual use. My Rating Criteria are as follows: It should be kept in mind that these ratings are purely subjective. Rolands Nikon Pages. Nikkor Lens Technology. The key is to understand Nikon's alphabet soup. The only two gotchas in 50 years have been in 1986, when AF lenses lost the prong needed to couple to pre-1977 cameras. Some Nikon designations are mechanical, like F, AI, and AF; while others are optical, like ED and IF. Mechanical History F (also called pre-AI and non-AI): 1959 top Nikon Nikkor-H 50mm f/2. I have come to the conclusion that many modern lenses, during their computer-optimised design stage, have had certain performance criteria maximised to the disadvantage of other parameters. Best lenses for Nikon D600. KEH Camera Blog: Nikon Lenses: Non-AI, AI, AI-S, and AI'd. In Nikon F-mount manual-focus lenses, there are four main designations for lenses that refer to their meter coupling abilities.

They are: Non-AI, AI, AI-S, and AI'd. The differences can be noticed by visually inspecting the area on the back of the lens around the lens mount, as well as around the aperture ring. Below, we will be explaining the differences in these lenses and how to tell them apart by looking at them. Non-AI lens. Notice there are no recessed areas on this lens like on the others below, or any holes in the metering prongs. In 1959 Nikon began making lenses that at the time were called “Nikon F lenses”.

NÆRFOTO Bjørn Rørslett. Discussing Good Starter M42 Lenses for Nikon DSLRs in M42 Lenses and DSLR's. Arkku says: If you see an interesting lens and want to see how good it is, it's a good idea to search this group's and the M42 group's photo pool.

One can usually find sample shots there, if people have remembered to mention the lens used in the photo description or tags. =) In general Carl Zeiss Jena (excepting bad copies and the 50mm Tessar), Fuji and Mamiya/Sekor seem to be rather reliable brands for M42 lenses. Pentax Takumars are great for build quality and many are excellent lenses as well, but some of them do seem to have abysmal bokeh (e.g. Super Takumar 135mm f/3.5) and/or chromatic aberrations. But I recommend always researching each lens individually. As a comment on the above recommendations; the Helios-44M-x series lenses are rather good multi-coated clones of the Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2, and a lot cheaper. For 300mm lenses and up, one popular choice is the Tair-3 (I think) “fotosnaiper” (sic) lens. Special Lenses For Nikon 'F' Mount. The 105 mm f/2.8 VR Micro looks nice on paper, but using it in practice tells another story.

The lens barrel is now massive and you need a big hand to get a good grip on it. VR does work very well, but unless you use a tripod you end up with a lot of close-ups of just adequate, but not perfect, sharpness. VR shouldn't be used with the lens/camera on a tripod so there is yet another slider to set correctly and Murphy's Law dictates you'll forget this when shooting someting of critical importance or using slow shutter speeds.

Like the predecessor it uses the trick of shortening the focal length during focusing meaning that in a distance from slightly less than 40 cm to 31.4 cm (near limit), the magnification changes dramatically from 1:2 to 1:1. Colours are rendered better than the old 105 AF and the bokeh is much better. AF action with the TC14E is slow and slightly erratic, and with the TC17E just a bad joke.
