Infographic: Get More Out Of Google. So you want to be a consultant...? Or: Why work 8 hours/day for someone else when you can work 16 hours/day for yourself? I've been a consultant of one form or another since 1985 when I started my old company, V-Systems, with a friend from college, and actually did bits and pieces of consulting as early as 1982. I have been asked often about the business, and I decided to write this up. Please note that I am providing observations from my own personal experience, but I am not providing tax or legal advice. You need to pay somebody for that, and I'm not qualified. Furthermore, I am not even attempting to make this a comprehensive guide for everything required by one in or contemplating the consulting business. I am purposely omitting whole areas, such as licensure, insurance, and negotiating — there are other books for that, and this isn't trying to be one of them.

These sections (except the last) aren't in any particular order. Reading the sequences is the most systematic way to approach the Less Wrong archives. If you'd like an abridged index of the sequences, try XiXiDu's guide, or Academian's guide targeted at people who already have a science background. Benito's Guide aims to systematically fill the reader in on the most important ideas discussed on LessWrong (not just in the sequences).

It also begins with a series of videos, which are a friendly introduction, and useful if you enjoy talks and interviews. If you prefer books over blog posts, Thinking and Deciding by Jonathan Baron and Good and Real by Gary Drescher have been mentioned as books that overlap significantly with the sequences. eReader Formats The Sequences have been converted to eReader compatible formats by several projects. However, it wouldn’t be for another 18 months that I’d actually leave my job. During most of those 18 months I stayed stagnant, and made no progress to the goals I’d really set for myself – namely traveling the world, and building a business.

It wasn’t because I didn’t want to, but it was mostly because I didn’t know where to start. In 2009 things started coming together a little bit more, but it really only took about 5 months from the time that I started actually taking action to the time I parted ways from my job. I’ve found though, that once you start moving, it’s a hard train to get off. Your Excuses are Legit All the time I hear from people who want to start building a business for themselves but simply don’t know where to start. And you know what? The good news is, it doesn’t take as much drastic action as you think it does to start building a lifestyle business. Inventions | Submit, Vote & Collaborate at Quirky.
