The Mlynki: Inside one of the most beautiful caves in the world

The Mlynki is a rare crystal cave which lies in the Ternopil region of Ukraine and is known for the multi-coloured gypsum crystals which adorn its walls and twinkle in the light. These are the awesome images taken by intrepid photographer Oleg Grigorev who ventured into the remote cave to capture its beauty on camera. Apocalypse Dam: China's giant man-made waterfall as floodgates are opened to send millions of tons of silt downstream

Bystanders are dwarfed as they stand watching a tremendous rush of water gushing through gaps in a dam in China, part of a carefully-choreographed operation to remove silt from the Yellow River in Luoyang, in the Henan province. This annual operation sees more than 30 million tonnes of silt sent downstream a year, with more than 390 million tonnes shifted this way over the last 13 years. A resident takes a picture as the fierce waters plunge through three open slits in the dam during the controlled operation.

Google offers worldwide 'tips and tricks' training course (...and you get a certificate!) By Eddie Wrenn Published: 10:54 GMT, 5 July 2012 | Updated: 11:09 GMT, 5 July 2012 Did you know you can use Google as a calculator?

Google offers worldwide 'tips and tricks' training course (...and you get a certificate!)

Or that you can ask the search engine for a currency conversion and get it right there on the page? Alternatively, if you are on an image hunt, you can tell Google Images to just return pictures of faces, or perhaps you need a word defining as quickly as possible. Either way, most people are likely to use search engines for 'simple queries', so Google is planning a worldwide online training course, running over two weeks from next Tuesday, to teach some clever ways of searching for information. The course, composed of six parts, each 50 minutes in length, could end up being one of the largest online seminars ever, and will help users learn these tips and tricks, while also helping users tweak how they search to get the best result. Husband hunters of the Raj: How a 'fishing fleet' of 1920s society girls were drawn into sexual intrigues in India even steamier than the climate.

By Annabel Venning Published: 00:38 GMT, 6 July 2012 | Updated: 02:53 GMT, 6 July 2012 Cleaving their way through the sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean, the ships bore their cargo into port.

Husband hunters of the Raj: How a 'fishing fleet' of 1920s society girls were drawn into sexual intrigues in India even steamier than the climate

Whether at Colombo, on the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) or one of the Indian ports such as Madras, Calcutta or Bombay, the cargo was the same: hordes of eager young women, sweltering in the corsets, stockings and flannel underwear they were required to wear beneath their dresses — some still suffering from sea sickness as they staggered down the gangway into the searing heat. These were the girls of the ‘Fishing Fleet’, and they had come to India for the purpose of landing their catch — a husband.

If they succeeded in their quest, they might soon find themselves ensconced in a spacious bungalow with a retinue of servants, as the wife of a senior official or officer. Cosmic web of mysterious 'dark matter' detected holding two galaxy clusters together. Thread of 'cosmic web' found holding together two clustersTheoretical 'dark matter' is extremely difficult to detect'Glue' that holds galaxies together seen for first time By Rob Waugh Published: 11:28 GMT, 5 July 2012 | Updated: 11:35 GMT, 5 July 2012 A huge 'bridge' of invisible 'dark matter' has been detected holding two galaxy clusters, Abell 223 and Abell 222, together.

Cosmic web of mysterious 'dark matter' detected holding two galaxy clusters together

The filaments are thought to be a 'glue' that holds huge galaxy clusters together, but dark matter is extremely difficult to detect, as it does not emit any radiation. Instead, the 'bridge' was detected by the gravitational ripples it caused in space, distorting the light from nearby stars as it arrived on Earth. The filament is made of dark matter, a mysterious substance thought to make up up to 98% of the universe, but which is extremely difficult to detect.

NASA discovers portals in space between the Earth and the Sun (but don't book your ticket just yet) By James Nye Published: 21:55 GMT, 4 July 2012 | Updated: 22:05 GMT, 4 July 2012 NASA has turned science fiction into science fact by announcing the discovery of hidden 'portals' in Earth's magnetic field.

Called X-points or electron diffusion regions, rather than being intergalactic folds in space leading to different galaxies and planets, these portals aid in the transfer of the magnetic field from the Sun to Earth. Essentially, these portals aid in the transfer of tons of magnetically charged particles that flow from the Sun causing the northern and southern lights and geomagnetic storms. Disappearance of space dust orbiting sun-like star baffles astronomers. By James Titcomb Published: 00:42 GMT, 5 July 2012 | Updated: 00:48 GMT, 5 July 2012 Of all the things to lose track of, a stretch of space dust measuring hundreds of millions of miles across is surely one of the biggest.

Disappearance of space dust orbiting sun-like star baffles astronomers

Scientists are at a loss as to how an enormous ring of space dust - which could make up planets like ours - has disappeared from view around a star 450 light years (six trillion miles) away from Earth. Astronomers have monitored the star, with the decidedly un-catchy name of TYC 8241 2652, for 25 years before the glowing dust started to fade away over a period of two-and-a-half years. On one side of its body, it adopts female markings to deter potential rivals, while on the other, it displays brilliant masculine colours, enabling it to flirt furiously with partners-to-be. This behaviour in the male mourning cuttlefish, a squid-like creature common off Australia's east coast, is meant to boost mating chances in a short-lived species where discerning females far outnumber fiercely competitive males. Dubai dumps plans to transform QEII into a luxury hotel (instead it will rust in industrial port) By Amy Oliver Published: 16:12 GMT, 2 July 2012 | Updated: 06:38 GMT, 3 July 2012 The owners of the Queen Elizabeth II have scaled back plans to turn the ship into a luxury hotel. Instead of a lavish 1,000-room hotel floating in Dubai's man-made island shaped like a palm tree, the vessel will boast just 300 rooms and be moored in an unglamorous part of the town. The ship's operator, the investment arm of indebted conglomerate Dubai World, also said many of the ship's original fittings will remain, after the project fell foul of Dubai's 2008 debt crunch.
