Earthships are generally off-the-grid homes, minimizing their reliance on public utilities and fossil fuels. Earthships are built to utilize the available local resources, especially energy from the sun. For example, windows on sun-facing walls admit lighting and heating, and the buildings are often horseshoe-shaped to maximize natural light and solar-gain during winter months. Eventually, Reynolds' vision took the form of the common U-shaped earth-filled tire homes seen today. Systems[edit] Water[edit] Collection[edit] A domestic rainwater harvesting system. This is a rush transcript. AMY GOODMAN: We’re broadcasting from Los Alamos, New Mexico, the birthplace of the Nuclear Age. We turn right now to Mike Reynolds. We were driving along—from Durango, Colorado, to Taos, New Mexico, when we saw this remarkable collection, a fascinating collection, of structures scattered through the sage brush along the road.

MICHAEL REYNOLDS: Greenhouse, which is a buffer zone for the house, to make the house stay warmer, hold its heat longer. AMY GOODMAN: So the house is a jungle? MICHAEL REYNOLDS: Yeah, it’s pretty much, mostly, 50 percent, a jungle. AMY GOODMAN: And what is in—what is in these pillars of the house? AMY GOODMAN: And what are these materials, though?

How to build an Earthship

Earthship villages. Biotecture Academy (vol. X) Foxhole Homes. FOXHOLE HOMES' mission is to provide sustainable housing and community for Veterans in need.

Foxhole Homes

Our goal is to build a sustainable research community that will provide housing with little or no utility bills, and provide jobs for veterans using regenerative agricultural practices that will make the land throughout the community more fertile as time goes on. The members of the community will be integral to its development and the goal once it is completed is to be self-sustaining. Inspired by Earthship Biotecture the structures in the community will be designed to meet their own utility needs. We hope to take advantage of the Sustainable Development Test Site Act to explore what is possible and practical in building design and construction.

The agriculture will focus on intensive methods including aquaponics and cutting edge greenhouse designs as well as broad acre techniques utilizing perennial foods systems to build the fertility of the land over time, and restore.
