How To Identify That Light In The Sky?

Perhaps one of humanity’s more common questions, an answer may result from a few quick observations. For example — is it moving or blinking? If so, and if you live near a city, the answer is typically an airplane, since planes are so numerous and so few stars and satellites are bright enough to be seen over the din of artificial city lights. If not, and if you live far from a city, that bright light is likely a planet such as Venus or Mars – the former of which is constrained to appear near the horizon just before dawn or after dusk.Sometimes the low apparent motion of a distant airplane near the horizon makes it hard to tell from a bright planet, but even this can usually be discerned by the plane’s motion over a few minutes. Physics and Astronomy Glossary

Standard dictionaries are not always the best source of useful and correct definitions of them. This glossary is not intended to be complete. It focuses on those terms which give students particular difficulties. Some words have subtle and intricate meanings which cannot be encapsulated in a short definition. That's why textbooks exist. This document is continually under development and may never be finished. Glossary Accurate. Absolute uncertainty.

Though it seems inconsistent, the SI base unit is the gram-mole. Is Avogadro's constant just a number? , e, 3, 100, etc. The reciprocal of Avogadro's constant is numerically equal to the unified atomic mass unit, u, that is, 1/12 the mass of the carbon 12 atom. 1 u = 1.66043 x 10-27 kg = 1/6.02252 x 1023 mole-1. The first stars in the Universe were born several hundred million years after the Big Bang, ending a period known as the cosmological 'dark ages' -- when atoms of hydrogen and helium had formed, but nothing shone in visible light.

Now two Canadian researchers have calculated what these objects were like: they find that the first stars could have clustered together in phenomenally bright groups, with periods when they were as luminous as 100 million Suns. Alexander DeSouza and Shantanu Basu, both of the University of Western Ontario in Canada, publish their results in a paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Lunar Phases

Solar System. Lunar Cycle. Thousands of years of observation have shown that lunar rhythms affect us all, collectively and personally, instinctually and unconsciously.

Lunar Cycle

From the earliest simple etchings of moon phases on sticks, humanity has found ways to identify measure and predict the timing of events based on the cycles of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Modern calendars, the tools we use for synchronizing our activities with the rest of the world, continue to be calculated using a soli-lunar formula. Although lunar phases are known to dictate the movement of tides; the growth of plants; and the breeding habits of domesticated animals, fish, and game; we have become so out of touch with nature that few of us even notice the moon unless it’s dramatically full. Much less are we able to recognize its cycle or phase by its appearance and location in the sky. This has been true in astrological circles, as well, where the moon’s cycle is generally considered too fast and thus too short term to offer meaningful information.

The clouds are updated daily with current weather satellite imagery. The Mercator projection used here is one way of looking at the spherical earth as a flat map. Used since the 16th century for navigation, straight lines on this map can be used accurately as compass bearings but the size and shape of continents are distorted. Compare this with Peters, Mollweide or equirectangular projection maps. Also available is a semi-realistic view of dawn and dusk from far above the Earth, a look at the moon, and information about how this works.
