Texas [Ed]Tech: Teaching Integer Rules with Google Sheets - Multiplication & Division

The beauty of a tool like Google Sheets is that students now have a place to explore integer relationships and discover these patterns on their own. In a previous post, I showed how Sheets can be used to help students explore the patterns produced by integer addition. By comparison, the rules for multiplication and divisions (same signs = positive, different signs = negative) are relatively straightforward. In this Sheet, students input positive and negative factors into the multiplication rows first, then answer the questions using the dropdowns. These are color-coded to make the patterns easy to recognize. The division sheet will be populated with the related multiplication sentence from the first sheet.

The directions for using this sheet are pretty much the same as for the addition activity, so I simply refer you to that post for directions. Link to Other Google Classes. One thing I love about Google Classroom is that it is not rostered.

The Pros & Cons of Google Forms in Classroom

The problem, question, or situation doesn’t really matter; Google Forms is the answer. It’s the most powerful and versatile of all Google Apps, and can be used for a variety of purposes: data collection, assessment, feedback, sign up/RSVP, and so many more. Once you consider forms and sheets add-ons, the potential for forms to help with organization and communication is unlimited. I’m being hyperbolic for sure, but I could write a blog just on forms with new content for teachers regularly….and maybe I will. Earlier this year, Google Classroom rolled out a new forms integration, which makes using them with Classroom so much easier.

Missouri Global Summit featuring Google for Education Presentations and Resources by Kasey Bell #gafesummit. Google Classroom Assignments to Calendar. Services such as “Show MyHomework” provide a calendar of homework allocated to pupils and classes by their teachers.

These simple tools allow files to be attached to homework but require the files to be download to be completed and printed in a traditional manner. These tools do not integrate the allocation of assignments/tasks with the tools to carry out the work and depend on the learner having access to the required software to complete the task (and perhaps a printer to transfer it to paper for the teacher!). It would be great if you could integrate the calendar of assignments with the tools to complete the task AND provide a publicly viewable calendar that parents could view to see the work allocated to their child’s classes in a service that would handle all of the complexity of sharing permissions, copying files etc. for you.
