By Wayne D'Orio Here’s a riddle: Imagine there is a learning technique proven effective through 100 years of use that is now enhanced by the power of today’s technology. Imagine it can excite learners to continue their work well past the parameters of the school day. What is it, and would every school in the country do it? It is project-based learning, and the answer is yes, and no. Project-based learning can be traced back to John Dewey and it has come and gone since the early 20th century. As a pedagogical method, it often meets resistance since it doesn’t fit the skill-and-drill model that typically dominates education. Why Project-Based Learning? While project-based learning can be decidedly low tech, the recent surge of interest has been driven by the increase in technology capabilities in public schools. There are now 40 New Tech schools from coast to coast, including eight in California and four each in Texas and Louisiana.

There’s a new term you should add to your vocabulary. It’s ‘flexbooks’ and a Kansas State University assistant professor is hoping they change the way you teach. Places like Academic Pub , Kno , and CourseSmart (amongst many others) all offer options but the term flexbooks is completely new. I kinda like it. Assistant Professor Brian Lindshield says the flexbooks are designed to be read online and easy to update. Best of all, Professor Lindshield’s flexbook is free to students and is currently being used at a human nutrition course at Merrimack College in Massachusetts.
What was the impetus for flexbooks? Sick of paying for textbooks? Get them now, free and online. In the same way that free open online courseware is threatening to disrupt traditional universities, open textbook initiatives such as OpenStax College from Rice University threaten to do the same to the traditional textbook market. OpenStax College has taken five of the most popular topics taught in American universities and produced high quality peer-reviewed textbooks that are available for anyone to download for free. OpenStax College aims to try and save students at least $90 million over five years by capturing 10% of the US textbook market. Authors of textbooks in Flat World Knowledge receive a royalty on sales of printed versions of their textbooks, whereas authors contributing towards Rice University’s venture are volunteering their efforts. The Saylor Foundation has nearly finished creating a full suite of free, online courses in a dozen popular undergraduate majors. And the foundation is now offering a path to college credit for its offerings by partnering with two nontraditional players in higher education – Excelsior College and StraighterLine. The project started three years ago, when the foundation began hiring faculty members on a contract basis to build courses within their subject areas.
The professors scoured the web for free Open Education Resources (OER), but also created video lectures and tests. “I was able to develop my own material,” said Kevin Moquin, who created a business law course for Saylor. A former adjunct professor for a technical college and a for-profit institution, Moquin said the foundation gave him the “flexibility to adjust it as I needed.” The foundation currently has more than 240 courses up on its website. Colorado State University’s Global Campus will now accept credit from Udacity, an online startup whose founders believe that a “university-level education can be both high quality and low cost”. In order to receive credit students must show a “certificate of accomplishment” from Udacity demonstrating they passed the course and then pass a proctored exam at a secure testing center.
The exam costs $89 and the course is free, so students are paying about $30 per credit. We in public higher education need to begin repositioning ourselves as providers of academic services (mentoring, advising, coaching, etc.) because there is no way we can compete with free content delivery coupled with low-cost assessment.
