The Power of Project Learning. By Wayne D'Orio Here’s a riddle: Imagine there is a learning technique proven effective through 100 years of use that is now enhanced by the power of today’s technology. Imagine it can excite learners to continue their work well past the parameters of the school day. What is it, and would every school in the country do it? It is project-based learning, and the answer is yes, and no. Project-based learning can be traced back to John Dewey and it has come and gone since the early 20th century. As a pedagogical method, it often meets resistance since it doesn’t fit the skill-and-drill model that typically dominates education. Why Project-Based Learning? While project-based learning can be decidedly low tech, the recent surge of interest has been driven by the increase in technology capabilities in public schools. There are now 40 New Tech schools from coast to coast, including eight in California and four each in Texas and Louisiana.

Two other factors help Tech Valley’s mission. Framework for 21st Century Learning. Teachers Becoming More 'Digitally Inclined' Grow-creativity. Mashable. 4 Ways To Amplify Your Creativity. The holidays are over, the weather is lousy, and we’re sober again. We made all kinds of New Year’s promises, but the big one that will change our careers, if not our lives, is the promise to ourselves to become more creative. In my new book, Creative Intelligence, I show that creativity is learned behavior that gets better with training--like sports. You can make creativity routine and a regular part of your life. That’s true for big companies as well as small startups, corporate managers as well as entrepreneurs. Creativity is scalable. The huge national policy storm brewing over “dwindling innovation” and an “innovation shortfall” also gives creativity an even greater agency.

Creativity is the key to generating economic value and getting the U.S. economy to grow fast again. So here are four specific ways to lead a more creative life and boost your creative capacities. 1. So you need to engage with creative people. 2. 3. Creativity is relational. 4. Knowledge, Creativity and Innovation by David Gurteen. First published in the Journal of Knowledge Management Volume 2, Number 1, September 1998 Creativity and innovation concern the process of creating and applying new knowledge. As such they are at the very heart of knowledge management. Knowledge management, however, is an emerging discipline and creativity and innovation need to be thought about in this new context. This paper creates a framework in which to discuss these concepts. It goes on to explore how our creativity is ‘blocked’ in a variety ways, including deep-seated beliefs about the world. It is often thought, for example, that creativity is a serious analytical task limited to certain disciplines such as R&D.

This could not be further from the truth. If knowledge management is to have any real impact on the way we do business and not just a passing fad then it has got to be about making radical changes in the way that we perceive and utilise knowledge. OpenStax has been well received on college campuses as textbook prices remain stubbornly high By Dennis Carter, Assistant EditorRead more by Denny Carter August 14th, 2012 Educators at 55 colleges will use OpenStax books this fall. College students in some of the most heavily attended courses in the country will eclipse $1 million in textbook savings after a Rice University-based publisher had 13,000 open-source books downloaded since June. OpenStax College, a start-up online textbook publisher launched early this year, announced Aug. 14 that its first two book titles, College Physics and Introduction to Sociology, have sold more than 13,000 free copies – enough to save students $1 million during the upcoming fall semester.

Baraniuk’s goal is to save college students $95 million over the next five years. Open-textbook activists said skeptics of low-cost and free textbooks shouldn’t scoff at OpenStax’s modest adoption rate. “A bad book is still a bad book, even if it’s free,” Harris said. KSU Professor Developing ‘Flexbooks,’ The Textbook Of The Future.

There’s a new term you should add to your vocabulary. It’s ‘flexbooks’ and a Kansas State University assistant professor is hoping they change the way you teach. Click here to view an actual flexbook used at Kansas State University. E-textbooks are nothing new, neither are digital publications that you can actually update. Places like Academic Pub , Kno , and CourseSmart (amongst many others) all offer options but the term flexbooks is completely new. I kinda like it. Assistant Professor Brian Lindshield says the flexbooks are designed to be read online and easy to update. Best of all, Professor Lindshield’s flexbook is free to students and is currently being used at a human nutrition course at Merrimack College in Massachusetts.

What was the impetus for flexbooks? Sick of paying for textbooks? Get them now, free and online. In the same way that free open online courseware is threatening to disrupt traditional universities, open textbook initiatives such as OpenStax College from Rice University threaten to do the same to the traditional textbook market. OpenStax College has taken five of the most popular topics taught in American universities and produced high quality peer-reviewed textbooks that are available for anyone to download for free. OpenStax College aims to try and save students at least $90 million over five years by capturing 10% of the US textbook market. Authors of textbooks in Flat World Knowledge receive a royalty on sales of printed versions of their textbooks, whereas authors contributing towards Rice University’s venture are volunteering their efforts. Bookboon funds open access through the inclusion of advertising in the books. The move to electronic textbooks is something that students have adopted with gusto.

Spending time searching for a free textbook is probably not a priority. Build Your Own Digital Textbooks. When the governors of the nation's two most populous states bang the drum for schools to switch to electronic textbooks, you gotta think that the transition away from paper and toward digital devices would be rapidly under way. Indeed, the big three textbook publishers do offer nearly all of their products in a digital form, just as they're scrambling to keep up with demand for supplemental, game-like resources.

But while the rallying cry for open-source digital textbooks is coming from California and Texas, the real revolution is happening elsewhere. Create Your OwnIn districts from Arizona to Indiana, educators are opting out of textbooks altogether, culling from vetted electronic resources and courseware to essentially create their own texts. Online articles, simulations, and audiovisual files, along with lesson plans shared through wikis, can be found on the syllabi for a growing number of secondary classes. What to Do Now? Sensing the excitement from online education tools like edX , Google has just unveiled a (very beta) version of its own course building software. If you’ve ever wanted to run your own online courses, this might be worth your time. Google’s new Course Builder software comes on the heels of a massively popular online Google class ‘ Power Searching With Google ‘ hosted by Google’s Director of Research, Peter Norvig. Click here to get started with Google’s new Course Builder Why They Did It Norvig shared a bit more information about the impetus for creating the online course and the power searching course, saying it “was a strong success and also generated some technology that we thought would be useful to share with the world,” says Norvig.

“We feel that by sharing the code that we’ve generated, we can impact more people in the education space. It’s interesting that Google is trying to do something completely new rather than help build edX or an already established tool. 27 places to get a free science education | Citizen Science Center.

The Saylor Foundation has nearly finished creating a full suite of free, online courses in a dozen popular undergraduate majors. And the foundation is now offering a path to college credit for its offerings by partnering with two nontraditional players in higher education – Excelsior College and StraighterLine. The project started three years ago, when the foundation began hiring faculty members on a contract basis to build courses within their subject areas.

The professors scoured the web for free Open Education Resources (OER), but also created video lectures and tests. “I was able to develop my own material,” said Kevin Moquin, who created a business law course for Saylor. A former adjunct professor for a technical college and a for-profit institution, Moquin said the foundation gave him the “flexibility to adjust it as I needed.” The foundation currently has more than 240 courses up on its website. Price Wars? Like Excelsior, StraighterLine offers inexpensive courses online. Storming the castle: free courses & college credit.

Although the sound of the assault is barely perceptible through the thick walls of academia, the besiegers are steady and tireless as ants. How long before they break through? Colorado State University’s Global Campus will now accept credit from Udacity, an online startup whose founders believe that a “university-level education can be both high quality and low cost”. In order to receive credit students must show a “certificate of accomplishment” from Udacity demonstrating they passed the course and then pass a proctored exam at a secure testing center.

The exam costs $89 and the course is free, so students are paying about $30 per credit. We in public higher education need to begin repositioning ourselves as providers of academic services (mentoring, advising, coaching, etc.) because there is no way we can compete with free content delivery coupled with low-cost assessment.
