Wounded Knee Monument Inscription. National Park Service - Soldier and Brave (Wounded Knee Battlefield) Survey of Historic Sites and Buildings The regrettable and tragic clash of arms at this site on December 29, 1890, the last significant engagement between Indians and soldiers on the North American Continent, ended nearly four centuries of warfare between westward-wending Americans and the indigenous peoples.
Although the majority of the participants on both sides had not intended to use their arms—precipitated by individual indiscretion in a tense and confused situation rather than by organized premeditation—and although the haze of gunsmoke that hung over the battlefield has obscured some of the facts, the action more resembles a massacre than a battle. Greene’s presentation was part of Swarm Week festivities which culminate Saturday with the homecoming parade, tailgate and football game. Greene’s visit to campus was sponsored by the BHSU Alumni Office, with support from the Case Library for Western Historical Studies. Greene is one of several alumni being honored this homecoming. The Second Battle of Wounded Knee. At the beginning of Big Foot Trail, some 45 miles west of Wounded Knee, S.D., a yellow, slightly faded billboard stands frozen against the bleak Dakota horizon.
"45 miles to Wounded Knee," the billboard screams. "The historic site and mass grave of the last battle between the Indian and the white man. " Members of the militant American Indian movement passed that sign on their way to seize Wounded Knee. It is unlikely that they took any particular notice of the yellowed billboard. But to the white man, the sign works like a neon light, blinking subconsciously, "45 miles ahead-rid yourself of your guilt feelings here. " The white man's catharsis has been a long time in the making. New Page 1. Courageous hordes of whites formed caravans for the Westward trek, despite all the formidable hazards of the journey.
Nothing could stem the tide of civilization which swept relentlessly onward, over broken promises and treaties with the Indians, eventually destroying the entire economy of the red men. Rather than confront the police in Pine Ridge, some 200 AIM members and their supporters decided to occupy the symbolically significant hamlet of Wounded Knee, site of the 1890 massacre.
Wilson, with the backing of the federal government, responded by besieging Wounded Knee. Fire totals Wounded Knee Museum in Wall. An electrical fire has destroyed the 10-year-old Wounded Knee Museum in Wall, dedicated to the 1890 massacre on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The building is 80 percent wiped out, and the 30 exhibits inside the 2,600-square-foot structure are a total loss after the fire Sunday night. "It's like a parent losing a child, that is how we are feeling right now," Steve Wyant, the museum co-founder, said Thursday.
Wyant couldn't put an estimate on the building and museum's cost. He expects a full report from fire officials to detail the cause more specifically. Opened in 2003 off Interstate 90, Wyant said he created the museum "to promote tolerance and understanding and share the story of what occurred at the Wounded Knee Massacre. " Wall fire officials determined that faulty wiring beneath the floor started the blaze long after visitors and Wyant were gone for the day, he said.
