Why Teachers Participate in Twitter Chats (and What's Coming Next) Teachers who want to expand their knowledge, share instructional resources, and interact with others who have complementary professional interests are discovering that class is always in session thanks to the hundreds of regularly scheduled Twitter chats that happen each week. Collaborative conversations between like-minded educators from different schools - that previously and serendipitously only took place at conferences and on other irregular occasions - are now accessible to any teacher from any geography at any given time. Since 2009, hundreds of thousands of teachers have participated in Twitter chats to varying degrees. When you consider the volume of this unprecedented and cumulative knowledge sharing among professionals, who are trained to instruct and enlighten, it’s not hyperbole to say that the impact Twitter and other social platforms are having on education is revolutionary.

A good rubric can help students understand what is expected of them and it can help teachers score students’ assignments consistently and efficiently. If your students are submitting assignments to you through Google Drive or Google Classroom, you may find yourself looking for a way to create and use rubrics without having to leave your Google Drive account to give feedback to your students. Earlier this week I tried a new Google Docs Add-on called JoeZoo Express that you can use to create rubrics and give students feedback directly from Google Docs.

JoeZoo Express is not the only tool that offers this feature. Here are three others that are also worth trying.Online Rubric is a Google Spreadsheets Add-on that enables to you create rubrics, enter scores, and email scores to students all from one place. Online Rubric provides very clear instructions for each step of the processes of creating a roster sheet, creating a rubric, and emailing grades to students. Designing Adaptive and Personalized Learning Environments (Paperback) About the Book Designing Adaptive and Personalized Learning Environments provides a theoretically-based yet practical guide to systematic design processes for learning environments that provide automatic customization of learning and instruction.

The book consists of four main sections: In "Introduction and Overview," the concepts of adaptivity and personalization are introduced and explored in detail. In "Theoretical Perspectives with Example Applications," various theoretical concepts underlying adaptive and personalized learning are discussed, including cognitive profiling, content-based adaptivity, exploration-based adaptivity, and mobile and ubiquitous settings. In "Practical Perspectives with Example Applications," the implementation process for adaptive and personalized learning environments is described, followed by application in various contexts. Learning to play, playing to learn: the rise of playful learning in higher education - Digifest speaker, Chrissi Nerantzi.

Ever thought about using Lego in lectures or play dough in seminars? Chrissi Nerantzi, principal lecturer in academic CPD at Manchester Metropolitan University, thinks you should at least be considering it. She explains why. What is playful learning? "Playful learning is using play activities to immerse ourselves and learn, either on our own or with others in a space we feel safe. Why should we be interested in playful learning? "Why shouldn’t we? Can you give me any examples of playful learning in action, where it’s happening, how it happens? "In my own practice I can’t stop being playful.

I think we all become more adventurous when we feel that it is ok to do so and when we feel safe. Research into our own teaching practice is a really powerful strategy to get the evidence of how a specific intervention worked and was experienced but also the value it had for students or colleagues. So with Lego for example, how does playful learning take place? Creativity for learning unit Join the debate. Technological Supports for Acquiring 21st Century Skills. Dialogue and connectivism: A new approach to understanding and promoting dialogue-rich networked learning Abstract Connectivism offers a theory of learning for the digital age that is usually understood as contrasting with traditional behaviourist, cognitivist, and constructivist approaches. This article will provide an original and significant development of this theory through arguing and demonstrating how it can benefit from social constructivist perspectives and a focus on dialogue. Similarly, I argue that we need to ask whether networked social media is, essentially, a new landscape for dialogue and therefore should be conceived and investigated based on this premise, through considering dialogue as the primary means to develop and exploit connections for learning.

A key lever in this argument is the increasingly important requirement for greater criticality on the Internet in relation to our assessment and development of connections with people and resources. Colorful children's book introduces kids to the basics of code. On one page, you’ll see an illustration of kid scientists assembling multi-eyed orange creatures.

On another, an amicable blue furry creature leads a march of kids and an alien. At first glance, these look like pages from a normal children’s fantasy book. Look again and you’ll realize these are all characters on a journey decorated with HTML tags. The Wonderful World of Creatures & Code (WWoCC) is an A-Z style book with the purpose of introducing kids to code. But it’s not available for purchase just yet. The book was born out of a gift-searching trip that left Amie Pascal and her wife, Heather O. Instead, they wrote their own book in PDF form with colored words on a black background. “We felt like it would be a magical moment if something playful and fun could overlap with a seemingly hard thing like code,” Pascal, an executive producer at digital creative agency Instrument, told Mashable.

The world of business is thought to be ever so complex however it appears to revolve around two events, the passing of time and the passing of money. Both involve good planning and good luck; for without them both working hand-in-hand, one could stymie the other. For those readers that like examples, let us take the film industry. Production on a new movie does not occur without first deciding upon time involved in production and the finances to put the idea into action. However, how often do we hear that the making of the movie is “behind schedule” and “cost productions” are over budget. Such an occurrence is not rare but rather common practice. The identical business scenario results ever- so- often in the construction industry.

Yet, there is one set of workers that complete their job everyday on time, regardless of money or the lack of time….teachers. Today’s blog brings to you the esteemed thinker: Paulo Freire (b. In our increasingly information-saturated society, it can be challenging for young people (or any of us!) To sort fact from fiction in journalism. We get news from all directions, at all times, on multiple channels; citizen reporting competes with major corporate conglomerates for our attention and our trust.

As we get ready to celebrate News Engagement Day on October 6th, what can you do to help your students become more critical consumers of news media? Report: Encouraging STEM Studies - European Trade Union Committee for Education.

Details The European Parliament published in spring 2015 a report on 'Encouraging STEM studies, Labour Market Situation and Comparison of Practices Targeted at Young People in Different Member States'. The report analyses the labour market situation of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) occupations and national initiatives to increase the rate of new students in STEM studies. Many European member states have a shortage of workforce in STEM related occupations, although the unemployment rate especially among young people remains high.

On European and national level a 'wide range of European initiatives' has been implemented, nevertheless the number of STEM VET graduates has decreased and the number of STEM University graduates has only risen insignificantly. Therefore the European member states should develop active labour market politics and 'VET short cycles of higher education' with the focus on STEM occupations.

Untitled. Untitled. Why OERs are Important for Critical Pedagogues — Hybrid Ped. Few things annoy me more than burning time on bureaucratic paperwork. Frankly, as an educator, my time and attention should be centered on students and learning — and that includes modifying and selecting readings and resources. Finding fresh critical pedagogical articles that connect pop culture and critical thinking, for example, is not only more interesting to me professionally than revising course outcomes to match accreditation evaluation rubrics, but such articles are more useful and engaging for my students.

Plus, such articles can support critical thinking skills and connecting these skills with media in students’ lives. While some administrators might disagree, few educators would. Making this “idealistic” hope happen is a challenge. One possible path to this solution: reconceive how we as individuals approach Open Educational Resources (OERs) and our use of educational technologies. OERs are arguably convivial tools for several reasons. Lecture Notes in Educational Technology. ICT in Education.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can contribute to universal access to education, equity in education, the delivery of quality learning and teaching, teachers’ professional development and more efficient education management, governance and administration. UNESCO takes a holistic and comprehensive approach to promoting ICT in education. Access, inclusion and quality are among the main challenges they can address. The Organization’s Intersectoral Platform for ICT in education focuses on these issues through the joint work of three of its sectors: Communication & Information, Education and Science.

UNESCO’s global network of offices, institutes and partners provide Member States with resources for elaborating ICT in education policies, strategies and activities. If you manage social channels you are doing it wrong, if you analyze social activity you are doing it wrong. Everything is wrong from the basics, because we don’t know how social sharing actually works. Let me explain why... If you think social media equals to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest (and other open platforms), then I have to say that you are wrong. Don’t be surprised, but social media is not just Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. You are making a mistake, because you are concentrating just on the open platforms, which means you probably ignore two-thirds of all social activity around your brand.

Yes, I said private. Just look at the current trends. Probably you have already noticed that mobile phones are accounting for a significant part of social activity. The most exciting part of the story is not the emerging trend of mobile sharing in itself, but the way people share. For example: The Social Media Revolution 2012. E-Learning Tools.
