Conscientious objectors became known as 'conscies' or C.O's and they were a sign that not everybody was as enthusiastic about the war as the government would have liked. While much of the world has moved on, we are still in the fight to end capital punishment. Those of us who loved Troy see this two-year anniversary as more than an opportunity to mourn the death of a good man. We see this day as a chance to reflect on what Troy posthumously achieved and the charge we must all take up in his name to end the immoral practice of the death penalty. Though he never wanted to be a martyr, Troy wanted to make certain that his execution would fuel a movement to end capital punishment in this country and around the world. Among Troy's final words, he asked his family and friends "to continue to fight this fight" to abolish a system that is wrongfully and unjustly applied. Ethics: Capital punishment. The former protector of the country's elite joins 105 other individuals to have been executed between 2007 and 2012 according to Amnesty International figures. The decision comes in the same week that two men were hanged in Japan, sparking renewed controversy about the country's 'secret' executions. On Tuesday, a Bangladeshi supreme court postponed the execution of an opposition leader in order to review the case.

Japan and Bangladesh are each estimated to have executed 33 and 28 individuals respectively in the five years to 2012. Despite more countries abolishing the death penalty, its practice remains commonplace. China, together with Iran, North Korea, Yemen and the US (the only G7 country to still execute people) carried out the most executions last year. Amnesty has given us the data, right back to 2007.
