(December 5, 2011) How do we know that media make a difference? We’ve looked at the numbers. The Media Map Project , a multi-faceted research collaboration between Internews and The World Bank Institute, has made 25 data sets which collectively touch on every country in the world and up to 30 years' worth of information available to the public for download and analysis. Visualizations on the site allow viewers to interact with and test the data in different ways. Data science

http://radar.oreilly.com/2010/06/what-is-data-science.html We’ve all heard it: according to Hal Varian, statistics is the next sexy job . Five years ago, in What is Web 2.0 , Tim O’Reilly said that “data is the next Intel Inside.” But what does that statement mean? Why do we suddenly care about statistics and about data? In this post, I examine the many sides of data science — the technologies, the companies and the unique skill sets.

Online Data - ESRI

http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/UK-government-announces-open-data-initiative-1387087.html In his Autumn Statement on the state of the economy, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced a major initiative to open up availability of government-owned data. The published statement states economic as well as political reasons for opening up government data: "Making more public sector information available will help catalyse new markets and innovative products and services as well as improving standards and transparency in public services." The most notable areas of data that will be opened up are transport, weather and health; individuals will have access to their own online GP records by the end of the current parliament. Over the next five years, the government will provide up to £10 million to fund the establishment of an Open Data Institute near "Silicon Roundabout" in east London; this will help industry exploit the release of this data and will be headed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, of Southampton University.

Big Data: A New Approach to Finding Info

http://www.kdnuggets.com/2011/11/ai-one-makes-big-data-smaller.html A breakthrough method to graphically represent knowledge enables software developers to easily build intelligent agents such as Apple's Siri and IBM Watson. Nov 16, 2011, San Diego, CA - Artificial intelligence vendor ai-one will unveil a new approach to graphically represent knowledge at the SuperData conference in San Diego on Wednesday. The discovery, named ai-Fingerprint, is a significant breakthrough because it allows computers to understand the meaning of language much like a person.

Tetherless World

http://data-gov.tw.rpi.edu/wiki/The_Data-gov_Wiki The Data-gov Wiki is a project being pursued in the Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . We are investigating open government datasets using semantic web technologies. Currently, we are translating such datasets into RDF, getting them linked to the linked data cloud, and developing interesting applications and demos on linked government data. Most of the datasets shown on this page come from the US government's data.gov Web site, although some are from other countries or non-government sources. NEW: Visit our experimental DRUPAL site (featuring new demos and tutorials) For more information see:
Tim Finin, 3:50pm 6 November 2009 UMBC alumnus Joab Jackson has an article in Government Computer News, Tim Berners-Lee: Machine-readable Web still a ways off , reporting on the International Semantic Web Conference help outside of Washington DC at the end of October. The article uses data.gov to illustrate the challenges and opportunities for the Semantic Web. Data.gov is a site whose purpose “is to increase public access to high value, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.” Jackson quotes Tim Berners-Lee
