(December 5, 2011) How do we know that media make a difference? We’ve looked at the numbers. The Media Map Project , a multi-faceted research collaboration between Internews and The World Bank Institute, has made 25 data sets which collectively touch on every country in the world and up to 30 years' worth of information available to the public for download and analysis. Visualizations on the site allow viewers to interact with and test the data in different ways. Map the Numbers shows country-by-country scores for indices like the World Press Freedom Index, number of Internet Users per 100 people, and the Voice and Accountability Index. Countries' scores are compared to regions of the world, to show how they stack up on average.

28 November 2011 Having scrapped the Institute of Web Science promised by Gordon Brown, government gives Berners-Lee and Shadbolt an open data research centre The government will announce a number of open data initiatives tomorrow, including a new Open Data Institute near 'Silicon Roundabout'. The Open Data Institute will "innovate, exploit and research open data opportunities with business and academia", chancellor George Osborne will announce tomorrow.

In his Autumn Statement on the state of the economy, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced a major initiative to open up availability of government-owned data. The published statement states economic as well as political reasons for opening up government data: "Making more public sector information available will help catalyse new markets and innovative products and services as well as improving standards and transparency in public services." The most notable areas of data that will be opened up are transport, weather and health; individuals will have access to their own online GP records by the end of the current parliament. Over the next five years, the government will provide up to £10 million to fund the establishment of an Open Data Institute near "Silicon Roundabout" in east London; this will help industry exploit the release of this data and will be headed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, of Southampton University.
