5 E-Book Trends That Will Change the Future of Publishing. Philip Ruppel is president of McGraw-Hill Professional, a leading global publisher of print and electronic content and services for the business, scientific, technical, and medical communities. Without a doubt, the e-book is practically the biggest thing that’s hit the publishing industry since the invention of movable type. Publishers and e-book resellers are reporting astronomical growth. At McGraw-Hill, we have been an active player in e-book technology dating back to devices like the RocketBook (one of the first e-book readers) that was launched more than 10 years ago.

And today, e-books and e-book distribution is central to our publishing and growth strategy. From the front lines of the e-book revolution, here are five trends I’m watching. 1. Consumers have already shown that they love e-books for their convenience and accessibility, but ultimately most e-books today are the same as print, just in digital form. 2. Devices are proliferating to the point of confusion. 3. 4. 5. Video: see CNN debate about Wikileaks... - Martin Schiele. Video: see CNN debate about Wikileaks... - Jeremiah Owyang.

To whom it may concern: I have always loved humor and laughter. As a young engineer I got an impulse to start a Dial-a-Joke in the San Jose/San Francisco area. I was aware of such humor services in other countries, such as Australia. This idea came from my belief in laughter. The major expense for a young engineer is the rent of an apartment. As a side note, I once phoned the cable company in the town I lived in. In the earliest days of satellite TV to homes, you would buy a receiver and pay a fee to get all the common cable channels. Then I got this idea that I could pretty easily run my signal through the wires in conduits up and down our 60-home neighborhood. That's how the people think. iAd Producer. Posted by mario.gamper on Saturday, December 18, 2010 · 4 Comments Ideas will travel interview with Smart Design This fall I was lucky to be able to visit the headquarters of Smart Design in NYC. The global design firm is one of the recognized voices in the resurgence of design. Their iconic work features prominently in Gary Hustwit’s great documentary “Objectified” (Trailer here): a fascinating look at how designed things impact every second of our life.

However, when I sat down with Smart Design’s co-founder Dan Formosa and Paul Katz, their Director of Innovation Engineering, we hardly talked about how they design better working products or how they make sure their design is meaningful. “Back in time, someone would design or invent something. The media budgets grew – and put marketing in the driver’s seat, while design had to ride in the back. From Applied Design to Meaningful Design Luckily, things have changed. Google explores the human body with HTML5. Updated 2010-12-16 6:51 PM The Google Body Browser offers a three-dimensional, multi-layered view. Google has just soft-launched its latest browser experiment, the Google Body Browser, which is basically Google Earth for the human body. Think of it as a three-dimensional, multi-layered browser version of those Visible Man/Woman model kits. Or a virtualized version of Slim Goodbody, if you will.

Google showed off the app at the WebGL Camp. WebGL is a cross-platform low-level 3D graphics API that is designed to bring plugin-free 3D to the web. It uses the HTML5 Canvas element and does not require Flash, Java or other graphical plugins to run. If you visit bodybrowser.googlelabs.com in a supported web browser, you'll get a three-dimensional layered model of the human anatomy that you can zoom in on, rotate and search. Once you've got a compatible browser, visiting the Body Browser home page shows off the human body. This is a pretty cool display of new web technologies. F.A.Z.-Community. Visualizing a World of Facebook Connections. How do you visualize Facebook? As Facebook engineering intern Paul Butler notes, when you have a social graph of 500 million people, there are numerous ways in which you can view the data.

For his part, Butler has been interested in visualizing how our friendships are connected to geographic place. So he has created a visualization based on cities and the number of Facebook friendships between them. Using the open source statistical tool R, Butler has taken data from a sample of aboutu 10 million friendship pairs, plotted them to location, and counted the number of friends between pairs of cities. Here's part of Butler's explanation: "I defined weights for each pair of cities as a function of the Euclidean distance between them and the number of friends between them.

Butler says that when he shared the image with others at Facebook, "it resonated with many people. (You can find a high resolution image here.) The Role of Creative Technologist. The future of advertising isn’t advertising / we are social.

There’s been a lot of debate this year about what the future holds for agencies, culminating in this in depth look at the future of advertising in Fast Company. As you might guess, it’s a subject that’s pretty close to my heart, and during Internet Week I talked about the evolving agency landscape at the Results International event ‘Time to ‘reboot’ and prepare for growth’: As you can see from my deck above, I talked about four trends: the convergence of advertising and digitalthe convergence of earned and paid mediathe agency singularitya new kind of agency Those slides present a similar vision in a different way, and I love his networked media model on slide 10 (in fact I had so much deck envy I stole his much better title for my post), but his conclusions stop short of revealing the bigger picture: What’s emerging is a clear and simple separation between selling stuff and making useful stuff, people pitting experience design against messaging, a new model versus an old model.

Google launches ebook store with world’s largest library of titles. Is this the end of Amazon’s ebook reign? Google is launching its new open ebook store today, simply called Google eBooks, with over 3 million titles, in a bid to take on the ebook world dominated by Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Apple. As we reported previously, Google’s ebook venture will be more open than its competition. Consumers will be able to browse and search Google’s enormous ebook library, and they can read ebooks on any web enabled device. Your ebook library will be tied to your Google account and will be accessible through any web browser. You’ll be able to buy ebooks directly from Google, or from independent bookseller partners like Powell’s , Alibris and participating members of the American Bookseller’s Association .

Google wisely isn’t relying on the web entirely, as the company is releasing free Google eBooks apps for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The ebook store will also tie into Google Books, the company’s digitization project for the world’s books. Spectacular Interactive Photo Feature Showcases Slums around the World -... These days people have new powers. Not that kind. I mean on the Web. We can create websites and post messages to the world with the click of a button. Blogs, social networking sites and Twitter - all make it easy.

But this power comes with new responsibilities, especially when it comes to the workplace. Organizations often monitor what is said about them in the media and control every message that comes from the company. Chair Hero had made quality chairs for twenty years. The company started to panic. At first, they wrote press releases and posted information on their website. If you’re a small business, particularly if you’re just starting out, Tweeting might not be very high on your priority list. Balancing the books, hiring new employees, and gaining new customers is fairly more consuming.

But engaging with social media is important to stay relevant because it’s where your customers are; they’re Facebooking, they’re Tweeting and they’re sharing photos on Flickr, Instagram and Path. (They’re definitely not MySpacing.) In terms of ROI, Twitter is a vital tool for interacting with customers and spreading the word about your business. Operating on Twitter is quick, contagious and easy if you follow these 6 steps: 1. Themselves, “Why do I want to follow this person?” 2. 3. Others will follow you because they like you, even though they might not really know you. 4. 5. 6. “Virgin America is the ONLY way to travel these days.” Once you’ve got the hang of Twitter, you may soon become addicted like the entire staff of The Next Web.
