The Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience is a group of theorists consisting of faculty, postdocs and graduate students. We are part of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California at Berkeley, located in the 5th floor of Evans Hall on the Berkeley campus. Our goal is to develop mathematical and computational models of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms involved in perception, cognition, learning, and motor function. We collaborate with experimental neuroscience labs in the design of experiments and in the analysis of neural data. We also train students at UC Berkeley in these ideas and methods. Members of the Redwood Center typically have backgrounds in computer science, physics and mathematics, in addition to neuroscience.

How accurate is the decoder? A good decoder should produce a reconstruction that a neutral observer judges to be visually similar to the viewed movie. However, it is difficult to quantify human judgments of visual similarity. https://sites.google.com/site/gallantlabucb/publications/nishimoto-et-al-2011

A popular misconception is that when a document is declassified, it is somehow systematically made available to the public, for example, distributed to depository libraries. http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/doemoff/govinfo/federal/gov_decldoc.html

Journalism chops, media savvy, nerdiness and (especially) curiosity add up to the “Field Trip Podcast,” a radio program created by a trio of J-School grads, and returning soon to a computer or smartphone near you. Persons of Interest: Immunology grad student Patty Garcia chips away at the barriers that divide science and society, while puzzling out the molecular mechanics of cancer. Berkeley’s libraries fill to overflowing with students pulling all-nighters during the study period knows as dead week, starting Monday. With them tends to come pizzas, sandwiches, sodas and coffee. And that attracts book-destroying insects, vermin and mold. At Moffitt, a vivid display using plastic critters and real, damaged books is part of the library’s effort to head off harm to its valuable collections. http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/

Basic Income Studies

Basic income is a universal income grant available to every citizen without means test or work requirement. Academic discussion of basic income and related policies has been growing in the fields of economics, philosophy, political science, sociology, and public policy over the last few decades — with dozens of journal articles published each year, and basic income constituting the subject of more than 30 books in the last 10 years. In addition, the political discussion of basic income has been expanding through social organizations, NGOs and other advocacy groups. Internationally, recent years have witnessed the endorsement of basic income by grassroots movements as well as government officials in developing countries such as Brazil or South-Africa.

UC San Diego’s Summer Bridge program began in 1978 with just 30 students as a way to empower incoming freshmen to be successful at UC San Diego. Today, roughly 4,700 students from underserved high schools have completed the program. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Summer Bridge. To commemorate the milestone, the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) will host an all-day celebration Saturday, April 28.
