View on Amazon [ Cross-posted from New Books in Political Science ] Matt Grossmann , Assistant Professor of Political Science at Michigan State University, has authored the recently released book, The Not-So-Special Interests: Interest Groups, Public Representation, and American Governance (Stanford University Press, 2012). The book challenges scholarly and conventional notions of how interest groups influence the policy process. Grossman argues that the focus of political scientists on collective-action and free riding, which has dominated the field for decades, has overlooked the significant contributions of David Truman.

On Friday 16 March, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso accompanied by the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn visited the JRC Ispra site. The President and the Commissioner got a first hand insight of various examples of JRC's scientific excellence. Nuclear security, standards for safer buildings, electro mobility, smart grids, food security and nanotechnology were some of the topics covered. On the same occasion, the President inaugurated the new European Crisis Management Laboratory (ECML), which supports EU's interventions in areas struck by disaster around the globe. The new facility is equipped with state-of-the-art information technologies, providing a dynamic situational awareness for crisis and disaster preparedness and response on any location or event in the world.By gluing radio chips to the backs of 800 honeybees, researchers proved that Neonicotinoid pesticides interfere with their behavior. Greg Laden reports that bees exposed to the common aphid-killer "forage abnormally, have 'olfactory memory' problems, are easily disoriented and become poor learners." Fewer of them ever return to the colony. Laden observes, "One thing that strikes me as especially interesting here is that many bees don't make it back over a fairly long period of time even under normal conditions, and that some bees stay out overnight!" Another likely contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder is a tiny parasitic fly that lays its eggs inside a living bee.
