The Thirty Greatest Mathematicians

Please send me e-mail if you believe there's a major flaw in my rankings (or an error in any of the biographies). Obviously the relative ranks of, say Fibonacci and Ramanujan, will never satisfy everyone since the reasons for their "greatness" are different. I'm sure I've overlooked great mathematicians who obviously belong on this list. Please e-mail and tell me! Following are the top mathematicians in chronological (birth-year) order. Earliest mathematicians Little is known of the earliest mathematics, but the famous Ishango Bone from Early Stone-Age Africa has tally marks suggesting arithmetic. Here's a fun trick to show a friend, a group, or an entire class of people. Step 1) Have them take the month number from their birthday: January = 1, Feb = 2 etc. Have them give you the total. How It Works: Let M be the month number and D will be the day number. Thus, if you subtract off the 165, what will remain will be the month in hundreds plus the day! By the way, if you wish to know how many minutes and seconds you have been alive and lots more about when you were born, you might like to try this website ==> Birthday Calculator.

Multiplication Table Tricks. Times tables tricks.

More and more in my teaching career, I'm seeing that children no longer memorize their multiplication tables. With the math curriculum as extensive as it is, teachers cannot afford to take the time to ensure that students learn the basic facts. Parents are partners in the process and will have greater opportunities for their children to succeed in math if they support the learning of the basics at home. Work with your children to ensure that they do not fall between the cracks. Help your children learn the facts. The 9 Times Quickie 1. The 4 Times Quickie 1. The 11 Times Rule #1 1.
