AP CALCULUS RESOURCES !!! - GeoGebraBook Consider the function . What happens as the input (x) gets bigger and bigger? The exponent will get infinitely large, but the base, , will approach the value 1 because as x gets bigger (i.e. "approaches infinity"), the ratio approaches zero. AIMS Puzzle Corner: Free Math Puzzles This week’s Puzzle Corner activity is a magic trick with a mathematical, as well as a slight-of-hand, component. I first came across this trick in one of Martin Gardner’s many books on recreational mathematics. I liked it so much that I have been stumping students, friends, and family members with it ever since. In order to make this trick work, you will need to practice it by yourself until the moves (illustrated at bottom) become automatic, before trying it out on someone else. Its success, like the success of many magic tricks, depends on diverting the audience’s in this case, your students’ attention. You can’t do this if you are uncertain of all the moves and take too much time making them.

The Mathematics of Juggling The late computer scientist Claude Shannon has a well-deserved reputation as the father of information theory, but he was also an avid unicyclist, juggler and tinkerer. He even built his own robotic juggling machine out of parts from an Erector set, programming it to juggle three metal balls by bouncing them against a drum. In the early 1980s, Shannon published the first formal mathematical theorem of juggling, correlating the length of time balls are in the air with how long each ball stays in the juggler’s hand. His theorem demonstrated the importance of hand speed to successful juggling.
