Online students and teachers are no different from the rest of academia

I'm an online higher education tutor. Some of you may read that last sentence as a confession, rather than a simple statement of fact. Why? In my view, it is because – despite its growing popularity and valuable role in the future of higher education – online learning is still a mystery to many in academia, and viewed with prejudice by some. Take me, for example. I'm not a radical, or anti-establishment – I've loved and respected working at every university I've joined.

That's something I share in common with my students. These students don't pursue online degrees as second best, nor are they students who have somehow been enticed away from traditional universities with promises of a better answer. So what are online students like? Tutorials are another aspect of online higher education that seems to mystify and confuse the onlooker. And what about the quality of the qualifications themselves?

Google launches tool to determine data use after death

The feature applies to email, social network Google Plus and other accounts. Users can choose to delete data after a set period of time, or pass it on to specific people. Internet users around the world have expressed concern about what happens to their data after their demise. "We hope that this new feature will enable you to plan your digital afterlife - in a way that protects your privacy and security - and make life easier for your loved ones after you're gone," Google said in a blogpost. California-based Google also owns YouTube, photo-sharing service Picasa and Blogger. Google said users can opt to have their data deleted after three, six, nine or 12 months of inactivity. Google Map Maker edit tools extended to cover the UK. 11 April 2013Last updated at 01:02 ET By Leo Kelion Technology reporter Users can add four different kinds of features to the firm's online maps Google is expanding its Map Maker edit tools to the UK.

The browser-based software allows users to add details about buildings, hiking trails, vegetation and other features to its maps of the country. Suggested additions and amendments are reviewed by other users and the firm's own staff before going live. The move comes at a time when Apple, Nokia and others are investing heavily in rival "free-to-use" mapping technologies. Experts suggest the rise of GPS-enabled devices means the efforts could hold the key to future profits if the firms add location-triggered adverts or use the data to promote situation-specific services. But for now they see little or no financial return from their current smartphone map apps beyond the value added to their brands.
