Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or C.S. What Pullman's promoters desperately hope is that parents will not get beyond the colorful covers, which appear to depict nothing more than an action/fantasy series filled with talking animals, exciting battles, and a child protagonist.

Okay, so it was in a mildly overheated tent and there were a few hundred other people but it amounts to the same thing, right? Pullman was at the Cheltenham Literary Festival to discuss his newest work Grimm's Tales for Young and Old, a retelling of 50 of his favourite tales by the Brothers Grimm. Although JK Rowling was due to headline at the festival later in the evening, the Pullman event was almost full to capacity with die-hard fans, many clutching copies of Northern Lights in hope of an autograph after the talk.

Admirers of Philip Pullman's 1995 His Dark Materials trilogy think the film guts the backbone of the book. Me, I just think it blows. Worlds where Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy was turned into a series of blockbuster movies, each better than the last. And worlds like ours, where the series crapped the bed after a single bloated, confused outing that was mired in meddling and flaccid compromise, and succeeded only in enraging everybody that it was supposed to pander to.

The Golden Compass Movie Review (2007

It springs from the same British world of quasi-philosophical magic, but creates more complex villains and poses more intriguing questions. As a visual experience, it is superb. As an escapist fantasy, it is challenging. Teenagers may be absorbed and younger children may be captivated; some kids in between may be a little conflicted, because its implications are murky. They weren't murky in the original 1995 novel, part of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, a best seller in Britain, less so here. For most families, such questions will be beside the point. Lyra's friend Roger (Ben Walker) disappears, one of many recently kidnapped children, and Lyra hears rumors that the Magisterium has taken them to an Arctic hideaway.

I realize this review itself may be murky, because theological considerations confuse the flow. Who killed off The Golden Compass? After the success of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy looked a dead cert for epic fantasy book franchise success.

Who killed off The Golden Compass?

In 2007, when first installment The Golden Compass was released, it looked to have all the right ingredients: moppet actors, spectacular battles, a sexy baddie, Ian McKellen, snow. But no sequels were made. Why? Actor Sam Elliot thinks he knows. The Golden Compass (trailer) À la croisée des mondes - La boussole d'or (2007.
