My early posts ( check January and February posts ) were discussions of the pros and cons of iPads. As the year has gone by and I have more time to research, read other iPad articles and experiment more with apps and with the students using them more frequently, I’ve had time to reflect on what iPads are offering schools. I’m not going to debate what model of iPad program to commit to – 1:1 or shared. I’m simply going to concentrate on what I think schools should consider before committing to iPads at all. Students at the school have access to their own devices, which they take home with them. Although I've taught for many years in classrooms where each student had a school-issued device, the experience of my new students taking their devices home has forced me to reflect on the issue of distraction. How do we teach students to integrate technology into their schoolwork and their learning while also making sure that they're staying focused on the task at hand?

All parents of iPad trial students were asked to complete a questionnaire, attend a focus group meeting and email any further thoughts to inform the decision making progress for future iPad use. Like I've done in years past, this week I'll be featuring some of the best new tech tools of 2013 as well as some of the most popular posts of the year. This week I got the itch to go beyond anecdotal stories about iPads in the classroom and look for some more substantial research and writing on the topic. Below are some of the reports that I’ve been reading through this week. Radical Reform: iPad Schools Seek to Transform Education - Page 1. iPads in the Classroom – London Knowledge Lab report. The London Knowledge Lab, in collaboration with the Institute of Education at the University of London, recently published its ‘What the research says’ report ‘iPads in the Classroom’ by Wilma Clark and Rosemary Luckin. The report is based on global research, including the ‘iPad Scotland Evaluation Study‘ that Sciennes Primary School took part in, and seeks to explore 1) if we know enough to demonstrate if, how and when iPads support learning 2) the key ideas from the literature on the effective use of iPads and other post-PC tablet devices and 3) the implications of tablet technologies for school leaders, network managers, teachers, learners and their parents.

A tremendously interesting and probably important experiment has been taking place at the University of California, Irvine since 2010. Since then, the university has been using tablet PCs to improve student learning and the program is showing signs of successful. Specifically, students enrolled in the college’s med school that are part of the program that is using the mobile devices are getting better results than their university peers, they are developing apps for the technology and they are even working to improve healthcare overall.

Named the “ iMedEd Initiative ,” all of the students enrolled in the college’s med school receive tablets with their textbooks and educational materials loaded on them. According to a report published by TabTimes, the tablets offer access to lectures, patient records and recorded data from the care setting such as digital stethoscopes, bedside diagnostic ultrasound units and other medical devices.
