Community management: are we all talking about the same thing?

There are various companies which specialise in community management and moderation, and have done for a number of years, but agencies (mostly PR and communications agencies, rather than digital ad agencies) are starting to claim expertise in community management, and to be honest, I don’t think they’re talking about the same thing as we are. It’s causing real confusion client-side.

While we both work with online communities, I think we need to be clear about the definitions of what we each do, so we can work together more effectively. Community management is the process of growing, building and nurturing an engaged and active community. This is very different from the process required to manage that community.

The Map The map is based upon the online community lifecycle. Over the past few decades the lifecycle has been developed by academics, refined by practitioners and perfected by us. There are four stages to online community development. These are inception, establishment, maturity and mitosis (there is death too, but lets skip that for now). {click for larger image} Stage 1) Inception The inception stage of the online community lifecycle begins when the organization or individual begins interacting with their target audience and ends with the community achieving a critical mass of activity. Online Community ROI: Models and Reporting – Research Study Posted

The Online Community Research Network studies and publishes 6 times a year on topics that matter to those responsible for guiding online community and social media activities in their organization. The Online Community ROI Models and Reporting research study was initiated in February of 2008. The study was created in order to investigate further into the ROI research that we conducted in the last half of 2007, and to gain insight into specifically how organizations were valuing and reporting on their online communities activities.

Further, we wanted to gain insight into who the stakeholders were for ROI metrics, and how the reports were being received. I will be blogging highlights of the report over the next few weeks. We received approximately 150 completed surveys. The concept has turned out to provide a useful perspective on knowing and learning. A growing number of people and organizations in various sectors are now focusing on communities of practice as a key to improving their performance. This brief and general introduction examines what communities of practice are and why researchers and practitioners in so many different contexts find them useful as an approach to knowing and learning. What are communities of practice?
