Hey Teamliquid, I have been creating electronic music using several programs (primarily FL Studio) for several years now....I've figured out a lot about the process and learned a lot, mostly self taught. I thought It would be helpful and fun to make a little helper article to show people how to do one of the neatest things in electronic music, namely producing your own unique sounds. There are already tons of tutorials out there, but 99% of them suck ass. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=275382

I am a producer of drum and bass, and other assorted electronica. Although I have been bitten hard by the *nix bug, this one application will ensure that I continue to run a Windows machine for a little longer at least. Steinberg et. al. are always moaning about the amount of piracy they suffer, if they can port their software to a platform where at least consumers don't have to pay through the nose for the OS, they may sell a few more copies of their apps...

Audio/Visual Applications for linux? - Ars Technica OpenForum

http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=874465&p=16212132#p16212132 Also, you might want to take a look at Audacity , a pretty nice sound editor. Although, yes, right now, there is no linux equivalent of Sound Forge and Vegas, and unfortunatelly, as of right now, I have to work almost exclusively with those two programs... Since I have at my disposal a Windows box on my office, I often use Vnc to access the machine, and execute Sound Forge from Linux box. Is not the best solution, but it works.
What I think your trying to do, I did with all my old casette tapes.. I would record a whole side using the "brec" command line program because you could tell it how many seconds to record for and then stop... I would do like 30mins... and then I would run that wav file through another program to split it into songs.. I used a cool program called grammophile to do that as well as remove some hiss... all from the command line.. not a mouse finger lifted... converted dozens of cassettes that way to mp3's. http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=901464&p=16700760#p16700760

"They said it was a short man with serious funk but no-one could recall his true name. It appears he was a mysterious stranger. Some believe him to have mentioned the word Scrubby but others believed he was really the ultra-hip alter ego...

Soundforge equivalent for Linux? - Ars Technica OpenForum

I think The_Hitman has gotten about everything that is really available for Linux, except for Audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net Audacity is nice in the fact that it also works in Windows, and is basic in functionality. Ardour is probably the most feature-rich app, and is more Logic-like than any of the others.
