"Reading a self-help book is like buying a lottery ticket," writes social psychologist Timothy Wilson in his newest book Redirect. First, let me share these three important takeaways from my experience. 1. OK, so “useless” may be a bit harsh, but when looking back at my past attempts I realized that if I had just done some planning and preparation, not only would I have been able to complete more words, they would have been the making of a publishable story. The key to preparing yourself for the challenge is to ask yourself these questions (which were once suggested to me by @JaneFriedman): What’s going to happen in the story? If you can nail these down, you will set yourself up in a much better position to write something meaningful and (potentially) publishable.

Writing about people unlike yourself– by race, ethnic group, age, and certainly gender or sexual preference– is always a big challenge, but also of great interest to a creative writer. The “don’t use which for restrictive clauses” rule comes (as far as I can tell) from Strunk and White. Plenty of authors, including Austen, have used “which” exactly as I use it in the title. It’s very commonly used like this here in England, so I’m guessing my comments are coming from US readers. There was never a period in the history of English when “which” at the beginning of a restrictive relative clause was an error.
