Help We Are Atomik grow! The term “Hobo Nickel” describes any small-denomination coin (though, normally soft nickels) that people carve to create miniature reliefs of…well, all sorts of things. It started sometime in the 18th century but continues to this day; There’s even an entire society dedicated to the art of nickel carving.

This all sounds stimulating, I know, but have a little faith. Source – Colossal Art & Design Other Things You Might Find Interesting. Artist Makes Massive Sea Monsters Out Of Stone | Sick Chirpse. Richard H Chapman. The main inspiration for Chapman’s sculptures comes from the art of ancient civilisations. The bronze figures with their strong idiosyncratic style appear at once powerful yet serene, with an essence of the spiritual energy of deities from primitive mythologies that watch like guardians over us all.

Mark Prescott studied fine art at Bath Academy of Art 1964-1967 where he was inspired by the experimental ceramics of that time and decided fired clay was a suitable material for his ideas. He took part in his first exhibition in 1969 when he was selected for the ‘National Ceramic Sculpture Exhibition’ at the Craft Potters Association, London.

In the 1970’s he worked at the Farnham Pottery, Wrecclesham, Surrey producing handmade bricks and tiles for restoration work. Amazing Nails Life Art Story by Vlad Artazov. The way Czech photographer Vlad Artazov arranges nails in settings that are astonishingly like real life is definitely worth attention. With only bent nails and some basic sets, he is able to convey a whole spectrum of human emotions.

The result is beautiful and surprisingly, sadly touching. Mostly black and white photography really gives you a better focus on the story that the photos express. The Star Wars films are iconic and widely celebrated by fans spanning across generations since the original's theatrical release in 1977. They have truly passed the test of time. Similarly, M. C. Escher's famous lithograph print Relativity, from 1953, is widely recognized by the public. The Michigan-based teen used somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 LEGO blocks to re-imagine the complicated, illusionary piece where "up" and "down" are undefined. Robot Fossils. I've been working on this series for about 6 months now, and for whatever reason I was a little hesitant about showing them off until they were all done. The original concept was to create full 1:1 scale humanoid robots in correlation to a little storyline I had brewing in my head, but I didn't have the space, time, or money for such a huge endeavor, and since I am not really a fan or collector of miniatures I decided small but 1:1 scale robotic animals would be the next best thing.

Additionally; somewhere on the other side of my brain I have been wanting to re-create the cover of the Alien 3 dvd but on a slab of stone simulating a fossil effect very much like the common Ammonite fossils. When the robotic-animals concept was conceived I saw it as an opportunity to combine the two projects into a much more interesting and original concept. So there you have it. Dutch designer Guus Van Leeuwen presented animal-shaped radiators at the Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show as part of Dutch Design Week last month. Each radiator is covered with a removable, wheat-filled animal skin that absorbs and stores heat, and can be used for warmth elsewhere in the house. See more from the Design Academy graduation show in our previous story.

The following is from Guus Van Leeuwen: “Domestic Animals” is a series of radiators shaped like animals. In earlier days people were very conscious of heating. Throughout the whole year they were busy to be able to put now and then some wood on the fire that was heating one room in the house during the winter. Besides the programming of electronic thermostat we don’t have to worry about the heating system that’s heating our whole house, wherefore the living room is losing its role as gathering place. The skins are filled with wheat seeds which capture warmth and stay warm for a long period of time.

Comments comments. Steampunk Insects. Since the late 1990′s style steampunk is becoming more and more popular, and not only in the literature. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by enthusiasts into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style. And often this stylization gives very unexpected results. Like, for example, art works of american sculptor Mike Libby. His studio Insect Lab make robots from dried insects. Insects for his works come from around the world, from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil, Texas, etc.

Each cog or gear wheel from antique pocketwatches and wristwatches are used as mechanical components. Each small robot from his collection is unique and costs a lot of money – price for the one robot ranges from $600 to $2500. Carved Book Landscapes. (click images for detail) For the better part of three decades multidisciplinary artist Guy Laramee has worked as a stage writer, director, composer, a fabricator of musical instruments, a singer, sculptor, painter and writer. Among his sculptural works are two incredible series of carved book landscapes and structures entitled Biblios and The Great Wall, where the dense pages of old books are excavated to reveal serene mountains, plateaus, and ancient structures.

Of these works he says: So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. Laramee’s next show will be in April of 2012 at the Galerie d’Art d’Outremont in Montreal.
