Pinterest, the website which lets people collect and share photos online with a “virtual pinboard,” has steadily amassed a very dedicated following of users that spreads far beyond the app-obsessed early adopter crowd. On Tuesday, a new study out of content sharing company Shareaholic showed just how powerful the Palo Alto, California-based startup has become. Shareaholic's survey (click to enlarge) Pinterest is now driving more referral traffic on the web than Google+, YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn — combined.
These days anyone can become a social curator, sharing links, sites and information with the rest of the world. Pandia takes a look at the best curation tools. Digital curation is the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets ( according to Wikipedia ). Curation used to be the domain of archivists and librarians. But the brunt of curation has moved over from the shelves and archives onto the Web.
You just can’t move for social curation services right now. The biggest noise might be coming from Pinterest , which is growing like a weed — but whether it’s the new-look Delicious , Switzerland’s Paperli , shopping curation site Svpply , image service Mlkshk or another site, the fact is that almost everybody seems to want to help you save and sort and share the things you find on the web right now. With this swirl of activity, then, it’s no surprise to hear that Parisian service Pearltrees — slogan “collect, organize, discover” — has just raised another $6 million of funding, led by local conglomerate Groupe Accueil. The company, which has been running in public since 2009, welcomed the injection of funds as a way to help expand and scale up its system for bookmarking and organizing, which is based around a clustered visual interface. And it needs that scale.
Last month I shared 40+ networks that you could consider depending on your niche or interests. As part of my commitment to this community, I shared that I will expand on this list throughout 2012. So here is the first addition to that build! The topic- Curation!
A bevy of curation sites like mlkshk, Gimmebar, Pinterest, Snip.it have seen huge growth over the past year, and we're starting to see many of these ideas incorporated across the web. And it's not just a few new users signing up for a hyped service; Pinterest is seeing growth rates similar to Facebook's rate back in 2006, and users are up 40x in the past six months alone. Even indie hip hop darling Drake has taken notice of it on Tumblr: "Instead of kids going out and making their own moments, they’re just taking these images and living vicariously through other people’s moments. It just kills me." Tumblr can be viewed as an early prototype with its dead simple tools for sharing different types of content, but many of these newcomers have added a grid-like design for easily browsing pages and sharing collections of pictures.
