'I'm Supposed to Be Dead Anyway': An Interview With a Teenage Convict - Hanna Rosin. When a judge sentenced then-17-year-old Brogan Rafferty to life without parole last year for aggravated murder, she allowed that he had been "dealt a lousy hand in life. " Rafferty's mother, Yvette, was a crack addict. His father, Michael, worked the early shift as a machinist. Rafferty was basically left to raise himself, one school counselor said. Along the way, he got mixed up with Richard Beasley, a family friend--and, it was later revealed, a ruthless murderer who convinced the teenager to help him kill three men.

To explain their unusual bond, Rafferty's attorneys dropped hints that maybe Beasley had molested Rafferty. Like most biographies condensed for courtroom drama, this one turned out to leave out much of the nuance and texture of an actual life. I asked Michael about a detail from the trial: as young as 5, Brogan ate breakfast alone and got himself ready for school. So why had Brogan bonded with this second father figure, so tightly that he would help him commit murders? Mr. This Pulsing Earth : Krulwich Wonders... It's breathing, he thought. "All of a sudden I see a thing with a heartbeat. " John Nelson is a designer, well known for tracing complex weather patterns or cultural information on maps, so considering what he usually does, this was easy. NASA's Visible Earth team publishes pictures of our planet every month of the year, so John thought, why not stitch them together, and see what the seasons look like from outer space?

So he stitched, and then looked. "I was surprised," he writes on his UX.Blog. After working a few hours on getting the cartographic mumbo jumbo out of the way (projection, coloration, atmospheric haze, and stuff), I first got to see the frames flicker in front of me, and I just stared at it as it looped over and over again. These images are gripping. Snowball Earth There have been times on Earth when the white didn't go. And it's gone the other way too. The Dance Of Whiteness And it is exactly this dance, the dance of whiteness, that is now, in more and more places, at risk. 10 Technical Papers Every Programmer Should Read (At Least Twice)

10 Technical Papers Every Programmer Should Read (At Least Twice) this is the second entry in a series on programmer enrichment Inspired by a fabulous post by Michael Feathers along a similar vein, I’ve composed this post as a sequel to the original. That is, while I agree almost wholly with Mr. Feather’s1 choices, I tend to think that his choices are design-oriented2 and/or philosophical. In no way, do I disparage that approach, instead I think that there is room for another list that is more technical in nature, but the question remains, where to go next?

In this post I will offer some guidance based on my own readings. All papers are freely available online (i.e. not pay-walled)They are technical (at times highly so)They cover a wide-range of topicsThe form the basis of knowledge that every great programmer should know, and may already Because of these constraints I will have missed some great papers, but for the most part I think this list is solid.

Ground Water and Surface Water A Single Resource--USGS Circular 1139 The Hydrologic Cycle and Interactions of Ground Water and Surface Water The hydrologic cycle describes the continuous movement of water above, on, and below the surface of the Earth. The water on the Earth's surface--surface water--occurs as streams, lakes, and wetlands, as well as bays and oceans. Surface water also includes the solid forms of water-- snow and ice. The hydrologic cycle commonly is portrayed by a very simplified diagram that shows only major transfers of water between continents and oceans, as in Figure 1.

Figure 1. To present the concepts and many facets of the interaction of ground water and surface water in a unified way, a conceptual landscape is used (Figure 2). Figure 2. Top 10 Greatest LSD Quotes “Nobody stopped thinking about those psychedelic experiences.

Once you’ve been to some of those places, you think, ‘How can I get back there again but make it a little easier on myself?’” —Quoted in Rolling Stone, November 30, 1989 "LSD burst over the dreary domain of the constipated bourgeoisie like the angelic herald of a new psychedelic millennium. We have never been the same since, nor will we ever be, for LSD demonstrated, even to skeptics, that the mansions of heaven and gardens of paradise lie within each and all of us.

" "If God dropped acid, would He see people? " "Always that same LSD story, you've all seen it. "In the beginning we were creating our music, ourselves, every night . . . starting with a few outlines, maybe a few words for a song. "I believe that with the advent of acid, we discovered a new way to think, and it has to do with piecing together new thoughts in your mind. War... war never changes... - Skyrim- Peter Hollens & Lindsey Stirling. The matter that's not not not there | Jon Butterworth | Life & Physics | Science. Astronomers study the motion of stars in galaxies, as they twist and rotate under each other's gravitational attraction.

The motion throws up a long-standing puzzle in astrophysics: The way the stars move indicates the presence of a certain amount of matter in the galaxies. But when you count up the matter in the visible stars, there isn't enough. This matter that's "not there" in the visible galaxy is called "dark matter". No one knows what it is. It could for example by supersymmetric fundamental particles, which we might see in high energy particle colliders like the LHC, although none has put in an appearance so far.

Several highly sensitive experiments huddled deep underground, where backgrounds are low, are hunting for hints of low-energy collisions between the atoms of the detectors and the dark matter particles the Earth is presumably passing through on its path through space. Despite some hints, no compelling discovery has been made yet. We shall see. Youtube Documentaries - Mobile. Blog » The Crazy World of Visual Hallucinations.
