Stanford Report, August 23, 2010 When researchers found an unusual linkage between solar flares and the inner life of radioactive elements on Earth, it touched off a scientific detective investigation that could end up protecting the lives of space-walking astronauts and maybe rewriting some of the assumptions of physics. By Dan Stober L.A. Cicero Peter Sturrock, professor emeritus of applied physics It's a mystery that presented itself unexpectedly: The radioactive decay of some elements sitting quietly in laboratories on Earth seemed to be influenced by activities inside the sun, 93 million miles away. Is this possible? Researchers from Stanford and Purdue University believe it is.

There is even an outside chance that this unexpected effect is brought about by a previously unknown particle emitted by the sun. The story begins, in a sense, in classrooms around the world, where students are taught that the rate of decay of a specific radioactive material is a constant. Random numbers. HOMETIME. In 1982 a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals you probably have never even heard Aspect's name, though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of science. Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them.

University of London physicist David Bohm, for example, believes Aspect's findings imply that objective reality does not exist, that despite its apparent solidity the universe is at heart a phantasm, a gigantic and splendidly detailed hologram. Professor Mike Conway has spent the better part of his life reporting and studying news, but his latest research project has made him the subject of the news. Conway is co-author of a study focusing on the oft-discussed media personality Bill O’Reilly. While many have accused the Fox News anchor of inciting fear and bias among his audience, what makes Conway and his colleagues’ research unique is quantitative data to back up their claims. Conway, along with IU telecommunications professor Maria Elizabeth Grabe and journalism doctoral student Kevin Grieves, picked up where the Institute for Propaganda Analysis left off in the 1930s, using a system of coding speech that analyzes the use of propaganda.

"It was supposed to be a way for the public to determine if someone is giving them propaganda instead of facts," Conway said. "He’s one of the most powerful people in media," Conway said. At the same time, people often raise questions about the journalistic merit of his views, he said. LOOSENING LIPS : The Art of the Interview by Eric Nalder. How to talk to the press A short guide to what works and what doesn't when talking to reporters Sometime around the year 2000 I started getting requests for interviews with reporters and it never really stopped. Based on what I've learned, here's a list of good and bad aspects, followed by my best and worst experiences, and some final thoughts. Things good reporters do This sounds simple, but few reporters do it well: know the subject. A good reporter does research on the interview subjects and knows the story they are covering forwards and backwards.

Things bad reporters do The biggest sign you're in a bad interview is when you can hear a keyboard involved. Another bad sign is the reporter that calls and asks long detailed leading questions. Things all reporters do These days, a lot of reporters have blogs of their own. On the record, off the record. Newser | Headline News Summaries, World News, Breaking News, and Local News.

Last week, I wrote an article defending free speech for everyone – and in response there have been riots, death threats, and the arrest of an editor who published the article.

Here’s how it happened. My column reported on a startling development at the United Nations. The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights has always had the job of investigating governments who forcibly take the fundamental human right to free speech from their citizens with violence. But in the past year, a coalition of religious fundamentalist states have successfully fought to change her job description.

Now, she has to report on “abuses of free expression” including “defamation of religions and prophets.” I argued this was a symbol of how religious fundamentalists – of all stripes – have been progressively stripping away the right to freely discuss their faiths. This trend is not confined to the UN. A religious idea is just an idea somebody had a long time ago, and claimed to have received from God.
