Humanities for the Environment. Posted: May 06, 2013 Energiewende is the name given to Germany’s move into a renewable and clean energy economy. This has meant a shift away from fossil fuels and nuclear power, and an embracing of wind, solar and geothermal energies. The next official goal is to reach 35% renewable energy by 2020. The final defined goal, however, is to reach 80% renewable energy by 2050, a goal that many are hoping is surpassed–according to Osha Gray Davidson, many Germans she spoke with during a three-week trip across the country believed 100% renewable energy could be reached by 2050. So, how much progress has Germany made? The Reichstag, Germany’s parliament building, serves as a powerful symbol of this movement. To find out more about Germany’s push for cleaner energy, “Clean Break” is available on Inside Climate News . 2004: early print use of term. Centre for World Environmental History.

The Centre for World Environmental History (CWEH) was launched in May 2002 under the aegis of the School of African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex. It was funded for an initial three year period by the Research and Development Fund of the University. CWEH has now raised funds from the Leverhulme Trust, the AHRC and the British Academy for independent projects. The creation of CWEH initative was a response to specialist courses and research conducted by Sussex faculty for over nine years in tropical and 'Southern' environmental history at, what was then, AFRAS and elsewhere in the University and within the Institute of Development Studies.

Sussex University has a long research tradition focussed on environment and development problems in the tropics as well as a close relationship with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). IDS, located on the Sussex campus, is Britain's leading organisation carrying out research on social and economic processes and problems. CEHP. About the Centre Welcome to the Centre for Environmental History and Policy (CEHP) website. We were originally established in 1999 and the Centre has always been strongly inter-disciplinary in outlook and research, looking to combine the best research in the Humanities and the Sciences to further advance our knowledge and understanding of the environment. By learning from the past we can inform future policy decisions. The management board of the Centre comprises internationally-recognised scholars from the School of Arts and Humanities and the School of Natural Sciences. The Centre is fundamentally interdisciplinary in both concept and practice.

Its research involves input from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including History, Politics, the Environmental Sciences, and Law. What is Environmental History? Sustainability - Projects - Trinity Long Room Hub. Achieving a sustainable relationship with the natural world, from understanding and moderating human impact on climate, to promoting the responsible use of finite and renewable natural resources, is now recognised as one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. Failure to meet this challenge will have very real consequences for the quality of life of future generations. Several initiatives hosted by, or affiliated with, the Trinity Long Room Hub relate to the broad concerns of sustainability, and have an important role to play in informing our attempts at achieving a sustainable relationship with the natural world. The Irish Environmental History Network (IEHN) The work of environmental historians, historical geographers, environmental archaeologists, palaeoecologists and scholars from numerous disciplines has shown that humanity's relationship with its environment has always been a fraught one.

KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory. KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory (EHL) is a new initiative at the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment. The EHL, based on a private donation in 2011, was launched at the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment in 2012. The environmental humanities is currently one of the most dynamic fields in the human sciences. Their dynamism and energy are derived from the increasing demand on human and social knowledge to meet global challenges. The environmental humanities are characterised by a hybrid nature, combining skills, methods, and theories from several humanities disciplines – historical, aesthetic, visual, anthropological, etc. – with problems and issues of high relevance for society and informed by science and technology. The work in the EHL follows organically from previous work conducted in the Division on environment, energy, media, and technologies. Read more about research and education at the lab.

As teachers and scholars in the humanities, we believe it is our responsibility to bring the perspectives and tools of our academic training to bear on environmental problems and possibilities. The humanities alone cannot grasp or solve the serious environmental crises that face us, but these crises cannot be fully understood or addressed without the unique resources provided by humanistic scholarship. We seek both to bring the perspectives and insights of the humanities into environmental studies and to bring environmental perspectives into teaching and research in the humanities.

We believe, further, that environmental crises will not be resolved solely by technological fixes. In order to address the environmental challenges ahead of us, we need a cultural shift in how we consider relations between humans and nonhuman nature. Links | Environmental Humanities Initiative.
