Rick Perry formally entered the 2012 campaign on Saturday, but everyone knew that he was running days before. On Friday's "Hardball," Matthews made it clear that he doesn't think much of the Texas governor. As he watched the footage MSNBC was playing of Perry, Matthews openly mocked him--and his Texas ways.
"He looks like a clown," Matthews said. If you want to understand Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry, understanding Dominionism isn’t optional. Put simply, Dominionism means that Christians have a God-given right to rule all earthly institutions. Originating among some of America’s most radical theocrats, it’s long had an influence on religious-right education and political organizing. And as for TV, I think MSNBC has been fine in criticizing the Tea Party on this, but we know Fox News' problem, and half the reporters on CNN are just waiting to move to Fox so they aren't going to trouble the water too much. The move by the nation's largest private university, aimed at improving graduation rates by weeding out students not ready for college and better preparing others, comes after several months of testing.
The free three-week program will be mandatory for new students with fewer than 24 college credits. University of Phoenix's parent, Apollo Group Inc., has been warning Wall Street that the move will hurt its financial results as enrollment growth slows or possibly declines, and on Wednesday, executives attached some specifics. In the fiscal year that begins Aug. 31, Apollo expects the percentage increase in revenue to be in the high single digits. Its operating profit for fiscal 2011 will be flat, officials said.
