Tonga is an archipelago of about 160 Polynesian islands, with the core of the kingdom covering an area of about 195,000 square miles. The entire city was build upon raised stone platforms in the sea instead of on dry land on neighboring islands, for reasons unknown. Much of Madol is underwater, including tunnels originally created beneath the sea, possibly as a way to secretly connect Madol and neighboring lands for trade, or as an escape route.
