Dogs, Dogs! Memory Matching Game with Free Printable Cards

This month's theme is Animals, and we had so many books to choose from because animals are one of our favorite topics around here. Earlier this month, we made a list of our favorite dog books, and we decided to choose one of those for our Story Corner activity. We chose Dogs, Dogs! By Michelle Nelson-Schmidt, and made a really fun matching memory game to go with it. This post contains affiliate links. Dogs, Dogs! Since Dogs, Dogs! Once you have printed and cut out your cards, you may want to glue them to card stock or heavy paper so that they are not see through. There are two ways to play the game depending on the age and skill level of your child. They loved it, and did a great job figuring out which dogs matched! Once we had played for a while, we got our book out again. This was a great activity that incorporated one of our favorite books, and was also a wonderful learning opportunity for my boys to practice their matching skills. Nettle's Notes

It reminded me of a very simple activity I’ve done a few times with my classes, and when I checked back in my photo archives I found a good example. First we read I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More! By Karen Beaumont, in which a boy paints every part of his body in. Then we use large paper and do tracings of each child’s body with pastel. The paper is not large enough for the whole body so the kids just pick which part they want to do – the head and shoulders, arms or legs. I generally do this activity starting with pastel, so they can do some more intricate designs and then pass out the paint for that large-scale, messy feeling that is in the book!
