The Misogyny Problem

Facebook Twitter

Fuck No Tumblr SJW - I'm just a bit confused on your mission or... Social justice warrior. "Social Justice Warrior" (abbreviated "SJW") is a snarl word used primarily on the interwebs to describe those who call out others for perceived social injustice. It's analogous to how conservatives use "liberal" or "leftist" as a snarl word, despite it having superficially positive connotations when it's first encountered. Very few people unironically self-identify as an SJW. The term was originally used as a somewhat neutral and usually humorous phrase describing someone who obsesses over social justice (or their own perception of it) to an almost-deranged extent; it could also refer to someone who is accused of otherizing and harassing opponents of (what they think is) social justice and failing to examine their prejudices and underlying beliefs.

[edit] Origin and spread Urban Dictionary user "poopem" defined "social justice warrior" on 21 April 2011 as:[3] Internet Aristocrat's video on SJWs typifies the views of Gamergate and conservatives.[15] [edit] Problems with the term [edit] 6 Ways Critics Of Political Correctness Have It Backwards | Cracked.com. During the recent Republican primary debate, the frontrunning "candidate," Donald Trump, said something that stuck out to me. No, I'm not talking about the time he admitted to bribing politicians or when he vomited a world-eating snake, I'm talking about his comments on political correctness: Fox News This is something I hear a lot these days -- sometimes it's angry bloggers complaining about "Social Justice Warriors" or "SJWs," sometimes it's Bill Maher, and sometimes it's even actual human beings with real thoughts and feelings.

So I dug into some of the "PC Suckz00rz" arguments and quickly realized that not only are they wrong, they're exactly wrong, which is sort of impressive. #6. There Are No Gay Men, Just Lesbians (And Those Chicks Can Be Converted) As screwed up as heterosexual relationships are in games, the gay ones are even worse ... that is, when they even bother to exist.

For example, in Mass Effect 1 and 2, there were no gay options for the male Shepard because the games were about "Shepard as a defined character," so in the designers' own words, they decided to "constrain the choice set somewhat. " The most sexually diverse setting is secretly owning a matching hat and shoes. Totally fine, right? Don't say Cracked never did anything for you, creepiest parts of the Internet. So What's the Deal? To be fair, sexuality is a really tough topic for anyone to touch, but especially for an industry as young and susceptible to criticism as gaming. Listen, we know we're picking on BioWare a lot for sex issues, but in a way, their constant, staggering screw-ups are actually commendable. "Don't look at his ass. . #1. They haven't.

A few minutes before the tweets started, I had gotten an email from Domino's, letting me know that my pizza order was ready, payable with cash upon delivery. I'd shrugged it off as a glitch in their ordering system. I hadn't ordered a pizza, and the address listed on the order was an apartment I hadn't lived in for a while. Now I looked at the Domino's email again. It was completely nuts: Two large pies, one with triple cheese, triple sausage, triple salami, triple barbecue, hot sauce, half onions and half pineapple, the other with no cheese and triple sausage, plus a large bottle of Coke. Nothing I—or anyone with functioning taste buds—would ever order. The total was nearly $50.I snorted with disbelief: I was being 4channed. You weren't being 4channed; this is just about ethics in the pizza delivery business. ON DESPAIR, GAMERGATE AND QUITTING THE HULK.

Gamergate. It's actually about ethics in video game journalism, you fucking slut! [note 1] Gamergate is a hostile reactionary mob in the video game-playing or "gamer" community. The group had existed for some time, although unnamed, such as when they started the misogynistic attacks on Anita Sarkeesian in 2012, but what is recognized as "Gamergate" began in mid-2014, after Zoë Quinn's ex-boyfriend, Eron Gjoni, sicced 4chan on her as his personal army. While Quinn, Sarkeesian, and other marginalized voices in gaming remain targets of the group, it has since evolved into an all-out conservative/reactionary mob whose main focus appears to be against whoever they deem is a "social justice warrior" and whatever they deem is an "agenda" against "freedom of speech" (that is their own speech and no one else's).

Gamergate Should Stop Lying to Itself -- Science of Us. If I, a journalist, want to learn more about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s views on the black-white college gap, or the National Rifle Association’s on “concealed carry” laws, a straightforward path lies before me: I can call or email these organizations, or consult the voluminous history of statements their officially appointed representatives have made in newspapers, press releases, and elsewhere. If, on the other hand, I want to learn more about #Gamergate, the once-niche “movement” that has burst into mainstream awareness the last couple weeks, things get a bit trickier — almost mystical. I basically have to play the part of a scared teenager in a pitch-black bathroom chanting the name of some dead Sumerian god into the mirror, equal parts terrified and titillated.

That is, I have to go on Twitter and post something with the #Gamergate hashtag and wait to see what pops up in response. Okay, fine, I thought. Let’s give this idea a shot. Gamergate Goons Can Scream All They Want, But They Can't Stop Progress. Games aren’t very fun these days. As anyone paying even tangential attention to videogames likely knows, the medium is in the throes of a misogynist backlash so virulent it often could be described as terrorism. In the past nine weeks, three female games professionals—Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu, and Zoe Quinn—have been driven from their homes by death threats.

Sarkeesian, a critic who received a bomb threat when she accepted an award at the Game Developer’s Conference earlier this year, recently became the target of a terror threat promising “the deadliest school shooting in American history” if she gave a scheduled lecture at Utah State University. Harassment is a sadly commonplace reality for women on the internet in almost any field—yet the ongoing death threats, rape threats, and harassment campaigns directed at women in games has eclipsed other media. But why has the emergence of new female voices in gaming provoked such a disproportionately violent reaction? An Existential Threat. The Future Of The Culture Wars Is Here, And It's Gamergate. I find it interesting in a way, because I'm old enough to have been around when, like porn, video games went from public places to the comfort of home (I had an Atari 2600, and yes, I destroyed the power rod by doing the quick on/off thing, trying to get bastardized versions of the games to play), and have sat on the sidelines watching it grow into the huge online environment that it's become.

I just wonder if the whole thing couldn't be solved by just ditching the need to fuck with other people just, you know, because you can. Now true, I might as well wonder if the whole thing couldn't be solved by rainbow colored unicorn shit, because some people have ALWAYS fucked with other people because they could, and they always will. But with the 24/7/365 access the online world offers, it's possible that that fucking with somebody could be constant, unrelenting, and immersive pounding on the emotional psyche that can erode somebody's life. Gamergate (sometimes referred to as GamerGate or as a hashtag #gamergate) is a controversy in video game culture which began in August 2014 and occurred primarily over social media.

It concerns ingrained[1] issues of sexism and misogyny in the gaming community, and journalistic ethics in the online gaming press, particularly conflicts of interest between video game journalists and developers.[2][3][4][5][6] Background As video game production developed into a burgeoning industry, games became an increasingly consumer-oriented product focused on appealing to gamers with satisfying solitary experiences. The growing popularity of games among casual consumers, due to more accessible technologies such as the Nintendo Wii and smartphones, expanded the audience for the industry to include many who did not fit the mold of the traditional hardcore gamer. Doctor Discusses The Psychology Behind The Fake Geek Girl Debate. I’ve been telling myself to stay out of this debate. I’ve been assuring myself that any time spent reading rants, posts, and their circular comments will only make me feel resentful and defensive.

I tell myself that the fight is over and no one won. I rationalize that only a few people are ruining it for the rest of us and therefore, those few should just be ignored. I vow to stop drawing attention to this ridiculous creature, to stop reinforcing the idea that the “Fake Geek Girl” exists. “Why don’t you just drop it?” “Why can’t you take a joke?” “Why aren’t you over this?” The truth is, I don’t know. We Think We Have to Protect Our Favorite Stuff from Outsiders Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images We'd like to think we're above it, but the reality is that a lot of our anxiety boils down to us being worried about other people taking our stuff. Even on a biological level, we define value by scarcity: Our bodies love sugar because it used to be really hard to find, and we love sex so much because it's really hard to find someone who doesn't have icky cooties. Therefore, when we like something, our strongest impulse is to hate-stab the ever-loving fuck out of anyone who starts eyeing our prized goods because we're pretty sure that they might take it, and then where will we get ours?

Actually, there's a lot of stuff I don't tell my brain. Photos.com"You mean that was your hand the whole time?
