Creating simplicity: How music fools the ear. What makes music beautiful? The best compositions transcend culture and time -- but what is the commonality which underscores their appeal? New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Research Notes suggests that the brain simplifies complex patterns, much in the same way that 'lossless' music compression formats reduce audio files, by removing redundant data and identifying patterns. There is a long held theory that the subconscious mind can recognise patterns within complex data and that we are hardwired to find simple patterns pleasurable.

Dr Nicholas Hudson used 'lossless' music compression programs to mimic the brain's ability to condense audio information. Dr Nicholas Hudson says "Enduring musical masterpieces, despite apparent complexity, possess high compressibility" and that it is this compressibility that we respond to. By Robert Hanrott Introduction Misrepresentation and religious hostility have pushed Epicureanism, unfairly, to the gloomy outer reaches of Western thought. Epicureanism has nonetheless influenced rational and progressive thought, particularly the humanists and enlightenment thinkers, and in the 20th Century it has influenced Ayn Rand and the Positivists. Epicureanism is neither irrelevant nor dead. Although two millenia have passed since the emergence of Christianity, the prejudice against Epicureanism survives, a tribute to the effectiveness of Roman Catholic criticism over the ages.

Epicureanism stands for moderation, enjoyment of life, tranquillity, friendship and lack of fear. This paper seeks to trace the insfluence wof Epicurus through the ages. A month can be helpful because it gives you a week to troubleshoot the concept and implementation. If it turns out an idea doesn't make sense, or fit you, you can adapt to something that works better. Assuming you plan to think over the results once every couple of days, you have time to try three versions of the resolution before you settle into one that fits you. You know it's just not appealing to you, you're not thirsty, and you're starting to lose interest in this resolution. Rather than having to throw out the habit, you stop, wonder if you're smaller than the person that the 8 cup recommendation was designed for and should adjust accordingly.
