It came as a surprise to me after over 20 years of seeing "normal" world maps to come across an upside down one. The most surprising thing was that I found it surprising. It is completely artificial that we have North at the top of a map. The convention came a few centuries ago when Northern hemisphere, European navigators started using the North star and the magnetic compass.

Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated , largely ungoverned settlement in Kowloon , Hong Kong . Originally a Chinese military fort , the Walled City became an enclave after the New Territories were leased to Britain in 1898. Its population increased dramatically following the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II . In 1987, the Walled City contained 33,000 residents within its 6.5-acre (0.3 km 2 ; 0.1 sq mi) borders.

Le 16 octobre 1869, deux ouvriers firent une découverte qui allait rendre mondialement célèbre le petit hameau de Cardiff, dans l’état de New York. En creusant un puits sur le terrain du fermier William Newell, ils exhumèrent ce qui semblait être le corps fossilisé d’un homme de 3m de haut. Sitôt la nouvelle répandue, des curieux affluèrent de toute la région pour venir voir le colosse de pierre, étendu dans une apparente posture d’agonie. Devant un tel succès, William Newell abrita le corps sous une tente, et commença à faire payer les visites. La communauté scientifique ne cachait pas son scepticisme à l’égard du géant de Cardiff, mais les fondamentalistes chrétiens en défendaient l’authenticité, considérant la découverte comme une preuve que les géants mentionnés dans l’Ancien Testament avaient bien existé. Ce qu’ils ignoraient, c’est qu’ils étaient les dindons d’une farce orchestrée par un certain George Hull, fabricant de cigares et cousin de Newell.
