Abandoned places and history from the five boroughs and beyond. Arthur Drooker. American Ruins After making a trip to Cambodia in 2004 to photograph ruins at Angkor Wat, I wondered what historic ruins there might be in my own country.

In 2005 I began a two-year odyssey photographing more than twenty-sites in fifteen states. The result was American Ruins (Merrell, 2007), my first book. I had three criteria for selecting these sites: They had to be preserved as historic ruins; they had to make a distinctive architectural and geographic contribution to the series; and they had to be suitable subjects for infrared photography, a medium that best evokes their inherent mystery. Infrared light is invisible to the human eye, but I use a specially adapted 35 mm digital camera to record it. Blog — Jordan Liles. As I move away from New York in one week, this is my way of giving back to the city that has given so much to me.

I worked for two amazing companies and met the love of my life during my four years and three months in the city. The experience of creating this project included researching, shooting, reshooting, writing and editing. In doing all of this, I have seen that modern technology is helping in the effort to make available to the entire world historical documents and images. Drone Discovers Abandoned Renaissance Faire Deep in Virginia Woods. Randy Fox: Welcome to the Rust Belt. I have a vested interest in the Rust Belt of America.

Randy Fox: Welcome to the Rust Belt

I grew up not far outside of it; the manufacturing and hard, dirty work foundation of the Rust Belt also underpins the towns in my home state of Iowa. So interested in this part of America, we focused on Detroit, one of its pinnacle cities, for our second issue of Boat Magazine. We saw first hand the decline of this once powerful manufacturing city; the empty warehouses, factories and abandoned houses taking over the city. Apart from pockets of hope and new businesses, it’s a city still mourning the death of its glory days. Abandoned Virginia Renaissance Faire. Only open in their Fredericksburg location from 1996 to 1999, the Virginia Renaissance Faire attempted to create a replica medieval square where dads could be bards and bards wouldn't be laughed at, but today all that remains are the tick-infested, mouldering husks of those bygone fantasies.

Abandoned Virginia Renaissance Faire

Built deep in the Virginia wilderness both to create an immersive atmosphere and to hide their shame, the Virginia Renaissance Faire attempted to create the illusion of a bustling feudal port. Multiple buildings were erected in the style of medieval European architecture with towers and improbable buildings on stilts. Troubled assets - geoff george - cinematographer - photographer. Their ubiquitousness, and craftsmanship, is a reminder of Detroit's large role in finance and the economy between 1920 and 1950. As millions flocked to the city to work for the auto companies, downtown banks established neighborhood branches with high frequency, often building near a competitor and using architecture that exuded confidence, class, and security. Today, many of these historic structures still stand -- no longer as banks, but rather as churches, hair salons, nightclubs, pawn shops, and day cares; others are abandoned, for sale, for lease, or their status is unknown.

Kurzius Marilyn Rodgers could do just about anything with her Saturday off, but instead she chooses to vacuum a train terminal. The executive director of Buffalo’s Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC), a nonprofit that’s rehabilitating the city’s vacant train station, goes up and down yards of original Terrazzo flooring, sucking up dirt with an industrial-strength cleaner. “I have to clean my house,” she jokes of the 523,000 square foot space where she frequently visits. Keeping a national landmark clean isn’t easy or cheap, especially one this size. GooBing Detroit. A garage in northeast Detroit deteriorates.
