The Collins C. Diboll Vieux Carré Survey - a project of The Historic New Orleans Collection

Diboll Vieux Carré Digital Survey is an electronic version of the Vieux Carré Survey, housed at The Historic New Orleans Collection since 1966. Created to bolster local historic preservation efforts, the survey is an extensive study of the properties within the French Quarter referencing essential historical, architectural, legal and sociological data on individual lots and structures from the French colonial period to the present. The materials cited are housed in a number of different repositories in the United States and abroad, including The Historic New Orleans Collection. Unlike the original survey, this version can be accessed through various data elements, including property owner. Navigating and Searching the Survey. Maps from the Historic New Orleans Collection.

The Classical Institute of the South is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to identifying and documenting fine and decorative art objects in the Gulf South and making that information available to all.

Gulf South Decorative & Fine Arts Database

We believe that objects are dynamic, provocative, and vital to understanding the past. Since the first Gulf South Field Survey in 2011, fellows and staff of the Classical Institute of the South (CIS) have cataloged over 1,000 objects in private collections dating from the 18th century through the Civil War. The survey spans Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and we are continually expanding our reach throughout the region.

So far, the Gulf South Field Study has only scratched the surface of the rich cultural material that survives in the region. In addition to expanding into new physical areas, the CIS also seeks to explore new material evidence of the cultural diversity represented in the Gulf South. Maps from the Historic New Orleans Collection. Painting in Louisiana from the Historic New Orleans Collection. Portrait of Betsy, accession number 1985.212, The Historic New Orleans Collection The Historic New Orleans Collection owns several hundred paintings (including oils and watercolors) by Louisiana and Southern artists.

Examples of these works encompass genres and subjects dealing with historical events in American History: slavery, the Civil War, the war of 1812 (specifically, the Battle of New Orleans) as well as Jazz, maritime commerce, the urban core of New Orleans, aspects of pluralistic ethnicity and gender relations, Louisiana’s deltaic landscape, and portraits both specific and emblematic. Some of these images have become well known through use in text books and documentary film projects, but many have never been reproduced.

In all cases, the paintings held by The Collection have a pronounced historical interest, documenting persons, places and events in Louisiana and by implication, the Gulf South. ViGOTHIC: collaboration among scribes in the BL Beatus - Littera Visigothica. In my last ViGOTHIC/VisigothicPal update, I managed to synthesize the initial problems arisen after what was a first approach to the “the DigiPal software meets Visigothic script” theme.

ViGOTHIC: collaboration among scribes in the BL Beatus - Littera Visigothica

That is, the undeniable need to determine a new and specific terminology to describe Visigothic script itself, one usable by palaeographers in writing and for a computer in organising palaeographical “thoughts”, before going back to work on the case study BL Beatus. I also alluded to the other objective accomplished during the first four months of the project: to determine how many scribes intervened in the copy of the Apocalypse of St John of Patmos included in the codex British Library Additional ms. 11695; their graphic characteristics and differences. For those of you who are familiar with this copy of the Apocalypse, so-called Beatus (I wrote a post about it a year ago), for me to have set this objective might sound silly since it is well-known it was copied by two scribes, Dominico and Nuño.

The Pomodoro Technique: Is It Right For You? If you spend any time at all researching life hacks, you’ve probably heard of the famous Pomodoro Technique. Created in the 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, the Pomodoro Technique is one of the more popular time management life hacks used today. But this method isn’t for everyone, and for every person who is a passionate adherent of the system, there is another person who is critical of the results.

Is the Pomodoro Technique right for you? It’s a matter of personal preference. Mapping Lake District Literature. One of the benefits of working with GIS is that, in allowing the user to visualise the geography underlying a complex set of data, it helps one more effectively to detect spatial patterns and relationships in that data. In the field of historical epidemiology, for example, GIS has proven to be extremely useful for studying the outbreak and spread of past epidemics, and thus for tracing trends in disease and mortality.

Recently, however, researches have begun to apply GIS to study other kinds of geographical phenomena, including literary and artistic representations of specific places and landscapes. Network analysis in the historical disciplines.

Historia de Alicante : Cornus. CARRERS D'ALACANT.

Humanities gone spatial. More and more humanities scholars, especially at the University of Iowa, are using geographic information system (GIS) technology to create digital maps that answer exciting new questions and engage the public. One example: the University of Iowa Museum of Art Mapping Project pins artworks from the museum’s collections to their places of origin. If you’ve used Google Maps recently—with options to view a city’s weather, terrain, traffic conditions, bike trails, even videos, photos, and relevant Wikipedia articles—you know a map can tell you a whole lot more than where you are and where you’re going.

Geographers know this better than anyone. For more than a century, they’ve built and used maps to study the physical, climatic, economic, political, and cultural characteristics of different regions, and the relationships between them.
