Food just tastes better outside, doesn't it? The first hint of warmer weather and you'll find us outside come mealtimes: on a porch, on a front stoop, on a park bench, wherever we can find a sunny spot to sit back and enjoy a meal al fresco. With Memorial Day next week, we feel the outdoor eating season is officially open. Here are ten of our favorite seasonal salads to pack up and take on a picnic. Potato Salad with Yogurt, Arugula, and Dill Many of these salads are meals on their own — a light dinner as we transition from spring into summer.

Easiest Jam Ever. And such a treat to have in the fridge for a quick snack among friends or a gorgeous breakfast. I love having homemade tidbits on hand so that I’m always prepared for something yummy when people stop by. But I hate things that take too long or are so much of an effort that buying it is easier. Well this jam is so versatile and probably the easiest recipe on the face of the earth.
Happy 4th of July folks! The biggest Summer holiday that celebrates all the important essentials-- swimming, BBQing, soaking up the rays while sipping on some ice cold beer lemonade. Are yall feeling me? Aside from getting a day off work, 4th of July is actually one of the most important holidays in America as it celebrates the legal celebration of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain. Pretty big deal guys, without the the Declaration of Independence America wouldn't be the land of dreams and opportunities known to so many people today.
The nesting phase hit. And it's Spring Cleaning time. And we get to have my mom come and stay with us for two whole weeks after the baby is born. It's what I call a cleaning perfect storm. I'm normally a compulsive cleaner to begin with, but add those extra factors on and I'm a one woman, waddling, cleaning machine.
It’s been raining a lot where I live lately, and I happen to also be studying for exams, so the mix of those two things means eating lots of junky food. Snacking is inevitable. With this in mind, I figured I should probably make a healthier munchie so I’m not eating garbage all the time.
Whether or not you are a beet lover, if you are looking for the way to someone’s heart, try these red muffins. They are fun to make, and even better the naturally intense colour of these muffins makes them an attractive as well as nutritious treat! The idea of perfecting this recipe came after I gently nagged a local chocolatier , my farmer’s market friend, demanding that he create beet flavoured chocolate to accompany their unique kale, tomato and other vegetable flavours. He explained that any additional flavouring added to chocolate making has to be strong and distinctive enough to overcome the taste of chocolate. Since it didn’t seem like the chocolatier was inclined to try this experiment, I decided to create my own concoction.

How do we love tacos? Let us count the ways… but then again, it’s virtually impossible to quantify. With Cinco de Mayo just two days away, we thought we’d dust off our recipe collection for some of our all time favorites. If you’re entertaining this Sunday (or any time this summer) , we love the idea of setting up a build-your-own taco bar and inviting guests to fill tortillas with the protein of their choice and all the fix-ins they can dream of. With endless possible combinations, making the perfect taco is practically fool-proof.
Here in Austin, we consume a serious amount of tacos. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack… any time of day can be considered taco time. Because of this, I always have leftover tortillas. When they start to get a little stale, I pop them in the freezer and eventually make this soup. There are two types of tortilla soup: the thin brothy kind ( usually with chicken ), and this creamy version where corn tortillas are cooked into the base of the soup as a thickener.
Just between you and me, I didn’t make these muffins intending to post them on the blog. Muffins don’t really have the tendency to be especially photogenic — they’re just kind of… muffins, you know? Well, one bite and I knew these were anything but ordinary, and the fact that something so healthy can also be so addictively delicious… I knew that I couldn’t keep them to myself. Now that Phoebe’s started to eat more solid foods, I’ve been having a lot of fun making things that are packed full of nutrition and that both of us love to eat. A few of our current favorites? Roasted sweet potatoes mashed with maple & cinnamon, avocado and berry yogurt “pudding” and now these muffins, obviously.
We don’t really have much to say about what emerged from the TasteSpotting Kitchen last week during our Dreyer’s/Edy’s Slow Churned Light Ice Cream fiesta… So we’re just going to share some drool-worthy photos and assure you that yes, you absolutely should, no, you need , to make these Chocolate-Dipped Coffee Ice Cream + Glazed Doughnut Sandwiches immediately. By the way, we didn’t make our own doughnuts , but don’t let that hold you back from doing so! We highly encourage that kind of kitchenly ambitious behavior, whether yeasted, cake, baked, fried, or otherwise.
3 Ways to Frozen Yogurt Bliss (That Don't Involve a Trip to Pinkberry) (Credit: iStockphoto / Elenathewise ) For those of us lucky enough to ride public transportation or to drive vehicles with broken air conditioners, the summer commute home can be a very, um, unappetizing experience. Our saving grace over this past week of hotness has been frozen yogurt--not the topping-laden stuff from a shiny storefront, but the inexpensive, quick kind we can make from single serving cups in our fridge. Preparing these treats in the evening and freezing them overnight means that when we come through the door after work the next day, there is icy salvation awaiting us. Here are three paths to frozen yogurt bliss:
Spring seems to be the season for moving — at least judging by the number of my friends who are packing up and moving homes right now! As soon as the books are on the shelves and the forks are back in a drawer, it's time to invite the masses over to check out your awesome new digs. A bag of chips and bowls of dip will not suffice for this housewarming, oh no! Let's make sure this party is the memorable first of many more to come. Cucumber-Rosemary Gin and Tonics
I’m so pumped that it’s finally Friday! I feel like I’ve been waiting for the weekend all week this week. Admittedly, I’m ready to kick my feet up, mix up some cocktails and usher in the weekend. I love a pretty party cocktail served up in a fun glass with a colorful garnish and a paper straw. (No, really. I drink out of paper straws on a daily basis at home.
