Pierson's puppeteers, strange, three-legged, two-headed aliens, have discovered an immense structure in a hitherto unexplored part of the universe. Frightened of meeting the builders of such a structure, the puppeteers set about assembling a team consisting of two humans, a puppeteer and a kzin, an alien not unlike an eight-foot-tall, red-furred cat, to explore it. The artefact is a vast circular ribbon of matter, some 180 million miles across, with a sun at its centre - the Ringworld. But the expedition goes disastrously wrong when the ship crashlands and its motley crew faces a trek across thousands of miles of the Ringworld's surface.

When preparing for college, one of the smartest moves a high schooler can make is to read, read, read. This is especially true of literary classics. The Best English-Language Fiction of the Twentieth Century - Alternative Rankings. C. 150-Point Scale.

http://www.stanford.edu/~bkunde/best/bl-meth2c.htm As noted in the explanation of the ranking system, the method I adopted to re-rank the titles from the sources originally used a simple 150-point scale, which remained in place on this site for over six years. It was abandoned after John Young pointed out that rating 100-title lists on the same scale as a 150-title list disadvantaged the former, an observation that resulted in the discovery of other problems with the system. Rather than consign it to complete oblivion, however, I present it here as an alternative ranking, and an object lesson, perhaps, in mathematical naiveté. An explanation of the alternative method follows: First, to ensure that equivalent ratings in each source were given equal weight, the rankings in each source list were converted into points on a 150-point scale (since there are 150 works in the longest source).

30 Very Funny Books--Seriously | Psychology Today

It's a dreary day, so I thought I'd indulge myself and come up with a list of my favorite comedies. A caveat, however: this is not a fancy English-professor-y list of the finest, most exquisitely crafted, most erudite or intellectually sophisticated works on paper in the language. Some days you need a jump-start to get to the funny parts of life. These books offer exactly that kind of infusion of comic energy and I rely on them to get me to smile when nothing else does the trick.
