Coventry and Warwickshire Culture - Anish Kapoor at the Rollright Stones. Croft Hill | NatureSpot. Stanton moor, nine ladies stone circle, derbyshire peak district, UK. Stanton Moor is in a fine position overlooking both the Derwent and Wye valleys. Possibly it is for this reason that it was chosen as a centre by the Bronze Age inhabitants of the area, who have left so many traces of their occupation upon the moor. The moor contains at least 70 barrows as well as stone circles, ancient enclosures and standing stones and is of such interest to archaeologists that the whole area is now protected. However, don't go expecting anything on the scale of Stonehenge, or even Arbor Low - most of the monuments and remains are very small-scale and overgrown with heather.

The best known monument is the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, which lies at the centre of the moor - a low circle of worn gritstone blocks in a lovely location. Just to the south is a small standing stone - the King's Stone - and these are probably only a small part of what was once some sort of ceremonial area. How to get there By Bus: the 172 bus runs from Bakewell to Stanton in Peak. No charge. Megalith Map square SK. British Isles Geological Map Wales Devon. Leicestershire. The Mystery of the Humber Stone : Reprint. By John Harrison Price: £4.50 Three miles northeast of Leicester lies the only ancient stone marked on The Ordnance Survey maps of Leicestershire. During the 1980's the Humber stone was under threat from the new Hamilton housing development and road widening. But as locals campaigned to save the stone, strange myths and legends about the stone came to light: accidents and bad luck to those who interfere with the stone; a ghostly monk seen nearby as well as a possible UFO sighting; a hideous creature with a goat's head and human body seen by a young boy; a haystack that had been placed over the stone catching fire, the author almost being struck by lightning near the stone.

Is the Humber stone on an ancient "alignment" which connects with Leicester Abbey, Kirby Muxloe castle, Beeby crossroads, Ashwell Church in Rutland, as well as other sites? Why should we respect ancient sites and what is their relevance today? Is it "The Brain of Leicestershire? " Altar Stones - Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust.
