Ideation. Tools for creating ideas. Creativity techniques. Creativity techniques are methods that encourage creative actions, whether in the arts or sciences.

Creativity techniques

They focus on a variety of aspects of creativity, including techniques for idea generation and divergent thinking, methods of re-framing problems, changes in the affective environment and so on. They can be used as part of problem solving, artistic expression, or therapy. Some techniques require groups of two or more people while other techniques can be accomplished alone. These methods include word games, written exercises and different types of improvisation, or algorithms for approaching problems. Aleatory techniques exploiting randomness are also common. Osborn began developing methods for creative problem solving in 1939. He was frustrated by employees’ inability to develop creative ideas individually for ad campaigns. In response, he began hosting group-thinking sessions and discovered a significant improvement in the quality and quantity of ideas produced by employees. Mind map. Mind map

A mind map is hierarchical and shows relationships among pieces of the whole.[1] It is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those major ideas. Free online mind mapping software.

Group concept mapping. Group concept mapping is a structured methodology for organizing the ideas of a group on any topic of interest and representing those ideas visually in a series of interrelated maps.[1][2] It is a type of integrative mixed method,[3][4] combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection and analysis.

Group concept mapping

Group concept mapping allows for a collaborative group process with groups of any size, including a broad and diverse array of participants.[1] Since its development in the late 1980s by William M.K. Trochim at Cornell University, it has been applied to various fields and contexts, including community and public health,[5][6][7][8] social work,[9][10] health care,[11] human services,[12][13] and biomedical research and evaluation.[14][15][16] Overview[edit] Process[edit] History[edit] Group concept mapping was developed as a methodology in the late 1980s by William M.K.

Forced Relationships, A Fun Brainstorm to Begin the Brand Process

He was a bit sheepish as he gave his answer. This is an enjoyable way to begin the brand discussion with a group, using a forced relationship exercise. It generally creates good discussion, and gets participants out of their normal frames of thought. “Forced Relationship” is basically a technique of forcing yourself to think of your organization’s brand in terms of another product or industry. 6-3-5 Brainwriting. 6-3-5 Brainwriting (also known as the 6-3-5 Method, or Method 635) is a group creativity technique used in marketing, advertising, design, writing and product development originally developed by Professor Bernd Rohrbach in 1968.[1] Based on the concept of Brainstorming, the aim of 6-3-5 Brainwriting is to generate 108 new ideas in half an hour.

6-3-5 Brainwriting

In a similar way to brainstorming, it is not the quality of ideas that matters but the quantity. The technique involves 6 participants who sit in a group and are supervised by a moderator. Each participant thinks up 3 ideas every 5 minutes. The ideas are written down on a worksheet and passed on to the next participant. Feature Driven Development (FDD) employs a smart way of rolling up development progress that provides an easily digested summary of project status using Parking Lot diagrams. Yet, their appreciation and use outside of FDD is quite rare. I taught an Agile Project Management class last week and nobody had seen or used them before, which is a shame because, especially for large projects, they are a great dashboard tool to illustrate overall progress and pain points.

Parking lot diagrams are not just for FDD projects, they can be used equally as well on XP, Scrum, or DSDM projects and this post will introduce them and provide you with a sample Excel spreadsheet for creating them. As projects get larger the number of features (user stories) you likely have to manage increases. Let’s say we have 15 features associated with our order entry functionality.
