Making thinking visible. Change Ahead.

For the last 3 years, educators in my department (IB Language Acquisition / foreign language) have been working hard at enriching and diversifying our appreciation for diverse approaches to teaching; as well as at broadening our explorations of learner-centered practices that benefit inquiry-based teaching and learning.

Change Ahead

The goal has always been clear to us: our focus is the process, and the learning experience. Building a community of learning from the moment we plan our curriculum and our classes, to the moment when we experience the creation of new understandings, has just been a very pleasing side effect. Evidently, in this journey, teachers and students are included. Teaching in three IB programs (PYP, MYP and DP) has helped me consolidate the scaffolding strategies and approaches that I implement as my students move form one stage or phase to the other. Yet, no other ‘transition’ excites me more than the one that occurs from the Primary Years Program to the Middle Years Program.

How can schools take global learning to the next level?

It's become clear over this week just how vital these skills are if our students are going to thrive as adults - and in an increasingly interconnected world there's really no excuse for students and schools to live in a bubble. As part of this series we ran a live chat so teaching professionals could come together and share best practice, new thinking and ideas. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Concept Based Learning

I believe it is vital that in our crowded curricula, we have a clear framework that encourages deeper thinking and connections between disciplines. Below is my presentation for the Teachmeet at the State Library of Victoria. It is a short overview of how Concept Based learning fits in with other curricula, frameworks and pedagogies (of which there are so many!). We are rewriting our Middle School Curriculum so that it fits with both the MYP and the Australian National Curriculum (ACARA). There are some tensions there: because the content is prescribed, implementing true inquiry based learning can be a challenge. When we start a unit, we look at the Key Concept and the Related Concepts in the MYP.

El español en el mundo. 62 Ideas For Using The iPad In The Classroom [Presentation] - If you’ve got a pulse, using the iPad in the classroom is something you’re at least interested in on some level. It’s either why you’re here, something you want to understand better, or you loathe it all and want to make sure to avoid it (it’s been interesting to watch the seemingly growing throngs of Luddites decry learning technology–who knew it all could be so polarizing?) But we digress. Some of the ideas for using the iPad in the classroom in the following presentation by scribd user denag33 are better than others. Projecting an image, making music, controlling your classroom computer, using it as a mini-whiteboard, accessing information, keeping notes, blogging, tracking an IEP checklist, making an impromptu teleprompter, and creating concept maps are some of the better ones.

Some of the presentation is a bit janky as well–illegible text, for starters–but the inclusion of both apps and ideas together, along with the sheer number of ideas, made it worth sharing.
