Instead, we’ll use their corresponding Pantone color to describe the tone of their skin. If this happens, we’ll have to thank artist Angelica Dass for building the first database of skin hues. Dass started her project, Humanae, in April 2012, by photographing some of her Brazilian family members. Dass sampled a small pixel from the subject’s skin—usually from the well-lit cheek area—and then matched it to a Pantone hue, which is used as the backdrop. Using an 11×11 pixel swatch from her subjects’ faces, Dass matches them to corresponding Pantone colors, creating an abundant and unique catalog of skin tones that reflects the world’s diversity beyond the categorizations we have long been confined to. What was your inspiration for using Pantone colors to represent humans? “If what I wanted was to destroy the concepts of colors associated with race, such as red, yellow, white and black, it would not be logical to use a color scale that works with percentages of these colors.

The subject highlights the decontextualization of places and architectural spaces in order to alter the natural structure. These places have in common the fact to be all completely square, regular and schematic, so achieving geometric shots in a minimalist context, where the simplicity and cleanliness reign supreme. Another point in common is the sky, infact each shot shows with a light blue background that decisively contrasts the brilliant colors of the architectures. So this places will cease to exist, the vision that result, won’t be more accostable to the original, it will recognize only systematic and organized compositions and structures.
