I had to make a change, a big change. As far as I could tell I had everything, and nothing to complain about. Reliable employment, a coveted corner office, a loving boyfriend and supportive family, my good health. I was living in the most beautiful town in the US, and I was (somewhat) financially secure…the list goes on. Fellow Americans, these days, are wondering where they’ll get their next meal…and I’m pondering personal happiness.

My life was empty, somehow. My internal compass pointed toward change. While I was in the thick of making change (otherwise known as disrupting and destroying my life), shoulder-deep in judgment from the people in my world, and bailing buckets of tears trying to stay afloat, this credo brought reassurance. I couldn’t help but smile at its simplicity. Therein lies the power. “If you don’t like something, change it.” It’s plain and simple, yet so difficult in practice. When they couldn’t take it anymore, she began knitting stuffed animals and selling them on Etsy, an e-commerce site for vintage and handmade items. One day in 2006, while she and her husband were talking about the mutant frogs that scientists were studying in a lake near their home in Burlington, Vermont, he joked that she should knit a dissected frog. Fascinated by biology, Stoneking took the joke seriously. She knitted the frog — exposed guts and all — and debuted it on her Etsy store. In my latest post over on Style Freak, I discussed a wonderful photographer who captures and affirms my faith in humanity, these people on the other hand are possibly enough to obliterate it. I don't really know where to start with this actually. I'm a bit gobsmacked (takes a lot). Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest freedom fighters of the 20th and 21st century and was denied this very right- freedom- for 27 years of his life whilst he was imprisoned for committing the crime of having black skin and speaking out for equality.
