Before the Future of Childhood: Immersive Media and Child Development salon took place in November 2018, we invited experts to share their visions about the ways VR and AR might impact childhood 10 years from now. Jesse Schell is the CEO of Schell Games, the largest full-service education and entertainment game development company in the United States. Here, he explains why we should explore VR and AR—despite our current concerns—and their potential benefits for children. While many people think of virtual reality as a technology for the eyes, in truth VR is a technology that allows us to interact with computer generated worlds using our bodies.

By creating the illusion of presence, VR lets you feels as if you are truly in a place that you can reach out and touch. Why do I say that VR and AR are media for children? The second reason is because one of the most powerful experiences that VR and AR are able to provide is that of giving the user an imaginary friend. Home | Immersive Media Design & Children. Kiley Sobel, PhD - Research ScientistLori Takeuchi, PhD The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, or the Cooney Center, is an independent research lab whose mission is to foster innovation in children's learning through digital media.

The Cooney Center catalyzes and supports research, development, and investment in digital media technologies to advance children's learning and is committed to the timely dissemination of useful research. Working closely with its fellows, national advisors, media scholars, and practitioners, the Center examines key issues in the field of digital media and learning. We are particularly interested in how children—especially those who are struggling—learn across both formal and informal environments, and whether they are interacting with media on their own or together with teachers, family members or their peers.

Recently, we have been concentrating on how children are impacted by and learn with immersive media. The Concord Consortium’s new initiative is setting its sights on the future of education. Designing 2030 is galvanizing plans to revolutionize STEM teaching and learning with the goal of reaching more students with open data and educational technology. At the inaugural Designing 2030 two-day summit in May 2018, the Concord Consortium convened 30 STEM education professionals, leaders of informal education institutions, scientists, entrepreneurs, curriculum developers, K-12 educational software programmers, teachers, and learning scientists at Dynamicland, an experimental community computing space in Oakland, California.

And in January 2019, 23 learning scientists, curriculum designers, youth media and open data researchers, citizen science specialists, and data literacy advocates gathered for a day and a half for Designing 2030: Thinking & Doing with Data in Palo Alto, California, to think specifically about teaching and learning in a data-rich world. Thirty years later, internet streaming technologies have enabled niche programming for micro-audiences. Independent creatives now have their pick of production studios, and audiences can choose their preferred content and providers with a click of a mouse—not the installation of a new satellite dish or cable box. This is a whole new experience for both the creative and the consumer that has lowered or eliminated barriers to entry and fundamentally changed what media distribution means.

It also leaves TV and cable broadcasters scrambling to define themselves in a streaming-first world. As a former CTO for a number of independent software vendors (ISVs), I anticipate a similar shift for the software industry, thanks to two disruptive technologies: serverless computing and globally distributed databases like Spanner. Snowflake software stacks But first, let’s talk about why enterprise software development is so hard and so expensive. What if this didn’t have to be the case?

Tip 1: Adopt the mantra “Proceed and be bold” Facebook’s office walls are lined with posters, including one that says “Proceed and be bold.”

Adopt this as your job search mantra. Being bold is especially important for women because we often fear putting ourselves out there. Men will apply for jobs if they think they meet just 60 percent of the job requirements, while women will apply only if they think they meet all of them. Now who’s got a better chance of getting that job—the man who applies for it or the woman who doesn’t? Exactly. Adopt the same principle for opportunities at work. Tip 2: Shift from a “what do I get?”

Most job seekers fall into the trap of focusing on what an organization will do for them, when putting the company’s needs front and center is what really gets you noticed. At every step in your job search, look for other opportunities to make a good impression. Tip 3: Negotiate—wisely! The wage gap starts early. Tip 4: Break long-term goals into short-term steps.
