As new MIT-led research suggests, those languages live in relative isolation, while a few tiny tongues are hugely influential. "A language like Dutch — spoken by 27 million people — can be a disproportionately large conduit, compared with a language like Arabic, which has a whopping 530 million native and second-language speakers," Science reports. "This is because the Dutch are very multilingual and very online. " To find out which languages are the most influential around the world, MIT researchers Shahar Ronen, César Hidalgo, and their co-authors tracked book translations, multiple language editions of Wikipedia, and multilingual Twitter users to see how languages interact with one another.

Part of it must be that because the students able to “converse” in English are better able to demonstrate their personalities, preferences, thoughts… and therefore, I get to know them better. Often it is simply hilarious to see the range of answers students feel free to share in a comfortable environment. One of my favourite podcasts was EnglishPod and I was disappointed when it went offline a few months ago. The good news is that it's back in a revamped form. The bad news is that they're starting from scratch and the old episodes are no longer available. Currently there are just three lessons at Elementary level on offer but 3 other channels are listed: Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced and I imagine more lessons will be added soon. The lessons follow the same format as before. If you sign up, you get free access to all areas of the site until February 1st 2009 and this includes transcripts, pronunciation and vocabulary exercises. I do have a couple of quibbles, however.
