Twitter for Academia

While I obviously spend a great deal of time online and thinking about the potential of these new networked digital communication structures, I also worry about the way that they too easily lead to increasingly short space and time for conversation, cutting off nuance and conversation, and what is often worse how these conversations often reduce to self-centered statements. When I first heard about Twitter I thought, this was the example par excellence of these fears, so for many months I did not investigate it at all. Then I read an article by Clive Thompson at Wired. Clive’s article convinced me that perhaps it was worth giving Twitter a try. Voki Home. Jing, Free Screenshot and Screencast Software.

Digital and Information Literacy Framework

Digital literacy includes the ability to find and use information (otherwise known as information literacy) but goes beyond this to encompass communication, collaboration and teamwork, social awareness in the digital environment, understanding of e-safety and creation of new information. Both digital and information literacy are underpinned by critical thinking and evaluation. What does the DIL framework cover and how is it structured? For the purposes of the DIL framework, digital literacy refers to the skills, competences, and dispositions of OU students using digital technologies to achieve personal, study, and work-related goals. The framework describes five ‘stages of development’ of digital literacy skills, competences and dispositions and maps them against the ‘levels’ of OU study. UKeU fiasco lost £20m in three years - 21 Jul 2004

The document has been sent out to creditors before UKeU is wound-down. It shows that the company lost £1.6m in 2002, £6.4m in 2003 and £13.4m in 2004. Staff costs almost doubled between 2003 and 2004 from £2.6m to £4.8m. At the same time, revenue at UKeU totalled just £5,000 in 2003 and £284,000 in 2004. Under the proposed voluntary arrangement, some £2m will be made available to creditors that include UK universities.

The document details how there had been 'expressions of interest' in UKeU's learning platform. These were not pursued because the platform would have required additional investment from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce). For this reason, the platform, which has cost £9.9m to develop, has a 'nil estimated realisable value', according to the document. Problem loading page. 10 Things I've Learned About Teaching Online.
